Hi, I was wondering if possibly you might have a "lazy bladder"
that doesn't quite want to let go of the urine? I seem to recall my
surgeon saying something about that in my consult, although that was back
in March. I admit 12 lbs. does sound a little slow. I would definitely
call your surgeon and see if something is up. I am a little over 2 weeks
post-op and I go to the bathroom 2 or three times a day with no problems;
not much output, but I'm not getting my 60 oz of fluid either, more like
48. I'm down 20 lbs. as of today. Please contact your surgeon to see if
he/she can find out if there's a problem. Good luck, and God Bless!

Sounds to me like your body had a reaction to the anesthsia and have had
this happen in the past with surgeries. I did and gained 30# in the
hospital with open RNY also. I had a difficult time for a short while after
getting the water works going. You really should contact your surgeon
he/she should know about your problem.

Sorry, I meant to say that I have had the same problem with anesthsia in
the past.

I'd definitly consult your surgeon. I would not be so much worried at this
early point that you have only lost 12 pounds. I wish people wouldn't tell
others that there weight loss is low because you very well could be
retaining fluid and it's discouraging to here your weight loss is low. You
may have a bladder infection going. With what your drinking you should be
peeing more. I have noticed though for some reason I pee less since I have
had this surgery. I think it's because I don't have all the weight
pressing on my bladder. I average about 3 times a day maybe 4. I used to
go all the time. I hope you find out whats going on soon. Also another
note about the weight loss is sometimes your body hords it's fat and
calories when it thinks its starving. I do think your calories are a bit
high so early on but thats only based on my procedure the RNY with a 1/2
ounce pouch. Yours may be different and your calories may be what they are
supposed to be. Good luck.

I had been on diuretics prior to WLS, then about a week after, my legs and
ankles swelled up so badly, I couldn't bend my knees. I called my surgeon
and asked if I could go back on the water pills, and within a couple of
days, the swelling went down totally. I guess they pump us so full of
fluids in the hospital, that sometimes we need a little help getting rid of
it. Call your surgeon. Good luck!

The reason your weight loss is low is because you're retaining water, and
water is heavy. Once it's flushed out you'll see a big loss! But you need
to get this taken care of, it can damage your kidneys if not treated. Your
PCP should be able to help you if your surgeon is unavailable. Do NOT
reduce your water intake! BTW, congrats on ignoring your family's
"advice"!

If you are concerned w/ any part of this process I completely advise you to
contact your Surgeon and not rely on what others on this site tell you.
It's nice to have the feedback but when it comes to matters of health, pick
up that phone. Don't worry about how fast the pounds fall off. We all lose
at different rates of speed. The bigger you are, the faster you seem to
lose. My surgeon told me at my 2wk appt that he thought that I would have
perhaps lost 11lbs. The fact that I'd lost 20+ was a bonus.

I'm going out on the limb with the other poster... 12 pound lost after
three weeks (first three weeks) is'nt good. I'll bet you that you HAVE lost
alot more than that but that you have alot of fluid retension! I had a
bothched surgery in July 93 and the butt heads cut into a limp node in my
upper thigh. Since then I always have masive water retension. I have to
take flurosemide every day. Unfortuanatly I'm so busy that I can't take it
everyday so I gain 5-10 pounds of fluid before I have time to stay home on
the pot. Anyway, that medicine will get the fluid off. But whatever you do,
DO STAY HOME and have 2-3 hours to yourself. Sometimes I'm on the road when
I take it and it is like a dog going from tree to tree in that you will be
going from gas station to gas station and it hurts! ;) For awhile I'd wake
up in the night with a full bladder and could'nt relax enough for it to
come out. That is one of the worst feelings I've ever had. I"ve had
alot of urinary surgeries and this was the result. Anyway should this be
your problem you may want to ask your doctor if you can try
"Cardura". It was fully, all the urologistist I saw, NOT ONE OF
THEM prescribed this. NONE OF THEM HELPED ME. It was'nt until I saw a
doctor (I've only seen a couple times as the clinic rotates doctors) that
he prescribed it as something that "might help". And help it did.
It relaxed the Sprinktor (spelling wrong) in the bladder so the pee would
come out. Funny as later when other docs would ask what meds I was on, I
told them. They said, you have heart problems? I said no. They said, what
are you doing on Cardura! Funny a heart med would help me pee. Anyway,
thankfully I did'nt need to be on it very long, but the fluroside and
cardura were a godsend. Good luck.

Should read "It was funny, all the urologistists I saw" (Sorry,
in a big hurry today).
