Question:
I don't understand??? I am post-op 2 1/2 weeks and I gained 2 lbs!!!!! WHY?
I am very frustrated ...It's completely impossible for me to consume less calories.... I get more then my 64 ounces of water and follow my post-op diet....I also walk 30 minutes a day...it makes NO logical sense at all...How can my body do this to me??? How can it sustain my 243lbs on less then 350 calories of a liquid diet??? I need encouragement please! — E. V. (posted on August 29, 2003)

I had surgery 8/6/2003 and I was feeling kind of frustrated myself with the
weight loss or lack of. I lost and gained back two pounds myself which
seems impossible on the amount of food that we are currently eating... but
I think I am having some "water retention" because my legs are
swelling. The more I drink the more I swell. Try not to be too upset
about your two pounds. Are you getting on the scale every day? I was
doing that and it is enough to drive yourself NUTS!!! Try to stay away
from that scale... both of us need to. I made my surgeon PROMISE me that
the weight would come off and he said it will. (smile) I guess we just
have to be patient and wait. God Bless you in your Journey!

off, take a deep breath and calm down. There are a few things you need to
remember... Adults' weight can very every day according to many factors...
time of day, time of month, water weight, if you just ate, if you haven't
had a BM... etc... You also have to remember that bathroom scales are not
always accurate.. they can change just from where you set them on the
floor. You could also still be retaining gas from surgery (if it was lap).
This surgery will work for you, you just need to give it time to work.
Personally I know I would drive myself crazy if I had a scale at home; I
would weigh everyday, and I dont think thats healthy.

This is normal. I went through this, and still go through this all the
time. Take a look in the library and you will see just how normal it is.
Our weight fluctuates daily due to fluid retention. Worry when you can't
stick to the program, you put on 10lbs in a month and it stays on. Trust
us, the weight does come off.

I agree with the others, this is probably fluid retention. However, is 350
calories what your doc/nutritionist asked you to take in? I think it is
too low for you to loose weight personally. If you eat too much you gain
weight of course, but too little and your body will hold onto what it has
as in "starvation mode." I recommend you double check how many
calories you are supposed to be taking in. Are you getting protein? My
doc advised me to have a goal of 60 grams protein, 500 calories during the
first month postop. Well I rarely get enough protein in, but without
enough protein/calorie intake you won't loose.

I agree with Beth! You're taking in FAR too few calories, and have made no
mention of protein. Are you in touch with your dietician? Call soon,
something isn't right here. Good luck!
