Question:
I just wonder since I'm 9 wks out...
Should I be doing more than walking? I either walk 2 miles or for atleast 1hr. When is it time to hit the gym? Thanks — luckyflowers (posted on August 21, 2003)

Of course you'll need to check with your physician first, but I was back to
the gym at three weeks post-op. Walking is great, but you'll really want to
start adding some cardio for the heart :)

Walking is cardio if you walk briskly which you should if this is your form
of exercise. I have walked since 8 weeks out and there are so many ways to
make walking even more of a work out for you. At 9 weeks out you are
probably eating no carbs and therefore really can't work out much harder
than that without eating into muscle. I had an exercise physiologist tell
me this. If I exercise too much even now at 7+ months out I pay for it with
a very low energy level.

Check with your doc. Mine doesn't want us doing anything too strenuous for
the first three months to reduce the risk of hernias (even in lap
patients). See what yours has to say.

I started with ap ersonal trainer yesterday and boy do I feel it today--but
it also feels good! Besides a lot of leg work on machines he has me doing
the following: 25 calf raises and lowering on a step, free weights two -
five # 3 reps of twelve --bicept lifts, tricep kickbacks for the batwings,
triceps lifts modified for the bench and he protected my abs and upper body
until 3 mos. after surgery. So I would advise one session with a personal
trainer--most gyms have them and the first training is free! to set up a
weightraining program designed specifically for you and your surgery needs.
I also walk /jog 1 1/2 miles a day--if you do it fast enough it's cardio!
Good luck! Open rny 6-9-03-38# and 3 sizes
