Question:
HELP!!!! I started my period today and have surgery Monday?
I started my period today and will not be done before surgery on Monday. What do they do for me during surgery? How do they help you afterwards. Has anyone had this problem so that I know what to expect? — Trin2rilax Cheryl McCoy (posted on August 21, 2003)

Unless you have abnormally long periods, by Monday you should be almost
done, right? I would not worry at all... women start their period after
surgery all the time and the nurses are well prepared to help you keep
clean and provide you with those huge pads.

My daughter got her period the day of surgery. While getting dressed for
surgery, she was given a sanitary napkin and told to "wedge" it
between her legs (no underwear allowed). She was somewhat upset, but the
nurses were great and acted like it was no big deal.

Mine started the morning of surgery. If you check the library you will see
that many of us have our periods at the time of surgery it is no big deal.
They may have you wear a pad into the OR (they don't recommend tampons)
Nurses and Docs are used to it and can handle it fine. I do however want to
make a suggestion... bring your own sanitary supplies. Some hospitals have
the modern pads, but most carry the giant antique pads you wear with a
special belt.

Since you won't be showering at the hospital, I recommend Cottenelle wipes
for freshening up down there. They are flushable (Lever smell better but
aren't flushable). Hope that helps!!

Had the same problem and asked my Surgeon. He laughed and said that it is
no problem at all.
