Question:
Can someone tell me a list of medicines that we can't have?

Can someone tell me where to find a list of medicines that we can't have. I had heard that we can't have aspirin. Why is that?    — Trin2rilax Cheryl McCoy (posted on August 21, 2003)

Hi, I am pre-op and have been busy gathering information from our brothers and sisters here at AMOS, one very informative profile is from WLS DEB - she has a link to this "meds to avoid" page: http://www.kcwlsfriends.homestead.com/medstoavoid.html It's a place to start, you should also be sure to consult your surgeon for his recommendations or additions to the list. Good luck on your journey!!! CJ

I would call your surgeon and get a list from him or her.

Aspirin and Ibuprofen irritate the stomach lining - not good for post-op healing. Many of the drugs on the "no" list do the same thing.

Anything that is "extended release" or something of that nature will no longer work is what I've been told. My doc has me opening one of my capsules and taking the med directly, even though they usually want it spread out all day, she thinks its okay to have it all at once for the Rx and reason I take it. (It is a BP pill that I take for migraines - since I don't have a BP problem, all at once won't hurt me).

This is really something you should ask your doc as some DO allow ibuprophen and other meds and some don't.

Some have already been mentioned. Some others are arthritus meds such as Vioxx, Arthrotex50 and Celebrex. I know the first two eat the heck out of my pouch. So I'm suffering some bad arthritus pain. Many here take Vioxx... they think it's safe but it will eventually catch up with them even though they think it won't. Also, I've found I can't take any meds on an empty stomach as I get exteme pains (ulcer?). Also, most of us can not do any time release meds anymore. I find I ALWAYS have to ask any doc who prescribes meds, "are they time release".
