Question:
What is a b-pap machine?
My doctor said he wanted to switch me form a c-pap to a b-pap. Or I think that is what he said. What is the difference? — Trin2rilax Cheryl McCoy (posted on August 20, 2003)

Hi Trina, I was on a bypap machine before I had this surgery. And the only
difference between a cpap adn a bypap is that: A cpap machine is continous
positive air way pressure that delivers the same amount of pressure to the
air ways as you sleep, and a bypap machine is where there is a higher level
of pressure when you inhale and a lower level of pressure when you exhale
while you sleep.

I'm guessing your numbers are on the high side and maybe you are
complaining of some problems. Like the previous poster said it allows the
pressure to be lower on the exhale. I was on Bi-PAP with settings of 22/18
before surgery, which is quite high. Once I hit a pressure of 18 I could
not breathe back against the CPAP setting, so they moved me to Bi-PAP and
it was sooooooo much better. I could take normal deep breaths and exhale
them. I slep so much better once they had me on Bi-PAP. I'd go for it if
the doctor is suggesting it.
