Question:
Nausea ....is this normal...and when will it go away?

I am almost 2 months post-op, here recently the very thought of eating makes me nauseous...I eat, but I have to force it down. I know that if not for the nausea I could eat a little more, but it is a challenge to get in what little I do. I am afraid that I will go into starvation mode if this does not end soon. Just wondering if this is normal...and when does it end...or is it just in my head. Thanks and God Bless! — Marsha P. (posted on August 7, 2003)

Marsha - I feel your pain! I am 3 months post-op and still sometimes have nauseau but not like I used to. At 1-2 months, I had nauseau almost all the time and couldn't/didn't want to eat at all. You are smart to "force" yourself to eat something but just hang in there, it will pass. Now, I can go a week or so without any nauseau whatsoever. It still comes back, but it's much less frequent than it used to be. I have found that the more carbs I eat, the more nauseous I become. Good luck to you!

Hi! I'm 7 mos post-op and still have nausea on occassion. Sometimes I can directly relate it to what I've eaten, other times not. Honestly, I truly think our bodies are still adjusting to the new way of digesting and processing. At 7 mos, it certainly does not happen as frequently as it did at 30, 60 & 90 days out, but still happens every once in a while. Hot Tea helps me tremendously. Hang in there ~ It does get better ~ and for me, worth every second! *hugs* Open RNY 1/3/03 330/216/175

I cannot answer as to how long the nausea will last, but I can give you a trick that really truly helps stop the feeling really quick -- smelling rubbing alcohol!
I know it sounds odd, but my really good friend, who is an RN told me about this after my surgery! My angel, who just had her RNY yesterday, after walking was nausious and I had her nurse get the alcohol wipes, and it worked for her instantly as well!
Just a tip to help you through the rough times! Two months is a tricky period. I had lots of throwing up and nausea at 2 months. Some days I had to go back to the bland soft diet that I was on the first week after surgery and then it subsided. I still get nauseous for no apparent reason but it's not as bad as it once was. Hang in there. It will get better.

Is it normal? Unfortunately, yes, for some of us. I had nausea nearly 24x7 for the first three months. But I did not vomit...you want to avoid vomiting because it can cause a staple line disruption. It ended suddenly somewhere around month 3 post-op, and never returned. I would speak to your doc about it, just in case there's something that can be done. Hugs, Joy

I find that when I start to become dehydrated I get nauseous and can't eat. I try to force it down anyway, and pump up on the fluids. I usually feel better in a few days. Good luck.

I was sicker then a dog for the first 8 weeks. I was only eating 300 calories a day and that's what caused the nausea. Make sure you get in 800 calories a day and the nausea should go away.
