Question:
I am almost 7 weeks post op and havent lost any weight in almost 3 weeks.

I am down 20 lbs. I went for my check up today and the surgeon says he is not worried. I am getting in enough water and protein and also exercise. He said I just need to give it time, some people plateau earlier than others. I already plateaued at 2 weeks post op. It is so hard not to worry about it. He said its all in the end result. I am doing my best not to worry, but its so frustrating. How can it be the scale isnt budging. Please help.    — SINDI W. (posted on August 1, 2003)

Oh my gosh, I'm right there with you!! I'm 7 1/2 weeks post-op, and have lost nothing since about July 22, and only 5 pounds in the 2 weeks before that. It's sooooooooo frustrating! My doctor and nutritionist both say I'm doing everything right. I don't have an answer for you, but I sure can share your angst!

I am sooooooo with both of you. I'm 8 1/2 weeks out and I've lost and gained the same 2 pounds in the past 2 weeks. I'm exercising and eating the right foods and nothing. This is so frustrationg. I'm ready to throw the scale through the window. I know I'm losing inches because I can tell in my clothes, but it would be nice to see that scale move.

I too know how you feel. At my 6 week check up I was devastated to have only lost 25 pounds. But I knew that I had gained almost 20 while in the hospital from the fluids. So that helped. Perhaps you also had fluid gain that you first had to get rid of. Also, my doctor just told me yesterday that about the 3rd through 6th months are the best months to start dropping more. I hope this helps a little.

Read my profile, I am the plateau queen! It is even more frustrating when you are so close to your goal (I am only 18 pounds away and have stayed the same and bounced around for several months now!) It is normal, it is frustrating, but you must know that you will lose weight and it will happen faster than you think. Keep up the good work, cut back on carbs/sugars/starches!

I WEIGHED THE SAME AT WEEKS 3,4,AND 5. I HAD LOST THE INITIAL 20 LBS, THEN NOTHING. IT'S NOW BEEN 11 WEEKS AND I HAVE LOST 54 LBS. IT WILL HAPPEN, BUT BOY! WHAT HEAD GAMES!!

I am 4 mos post op & I plateau for 3 weeks every month, starting with the first 4 weeks of surgery. I only lose one week per month or once every 3 weeks. If you stick with the program, it will come off. I have lost as much as 8lbs overnight, then nothing.

PLEASE, GET OFF THE SCALE!!!! Weigh only once a month and you won't believe how fast and how much you'll lose. With monthy weighing you'll never notice a plateau; you'll always have a loss. Best wishes.

I am with those that highly recommend you stay off the scale. I think how funny it is that I never owned one pre-op (if it's not there, I'd never have to weigh myself). I'm now almost 4 months post-op, and have only been weighed 3 times since surgery...each time at the doctor's office. I might buy a scale when I reach the Century Club, but in the meantime, it sure means MORE when you jump on the scale no more than once a month and see the huge difference it makes! I would drive myself nuts if I weighed as often as so many other new post-ops do! I need my sanity, thank you very much. Please, do yourself a favor...spend that extra time a day fretting over the scale by doing something more productive.....like throwing it against the wall or something! Best wishes for continued success!

I had to read this twice to make sure it wasn't me LOL. I just lost 5 # after 3 1/2 weeks of stalls. Have you lost inches? Be sure to measure yourself and see if you lost inches because you may be like me. I lose, then stall with no weight loss but I lose inches, then I drop weight. Staying away from the scale is good advice but unrealistic to some extent. We are all worried and will check the scale-- we're only human.
