Question:
Would like to try some crackers ...

I am 9 weeks post op (open RNY) and I am keeping my carb intake to a minimum but would like to try some crackers OCCASIONALLY with my cheese or peanut butter (or even by themselves sometimes). Can anyone recommend a reasonably healthy choice?    — MomBear2Cubs (posted on July 26, 2003)

i eat regular saltines for the crunch and that something salty. I don't eat them very often. That is the only thing with carbs that I eat. I don't do pasta or bread. So, I don't feel quilty.

Early post op, a favorite "meal" of mine was tuna with a little mayo spread on a Ritz cracker. I would then quarter a slice of cheese and melt it on top in the oven. I was able to eat about 2 crackers like this. Shelley

Just and FYI but they do sell low-carb crackers, whole wheat crackers and wasa flat bread (which is a lower carb hearty cracker). They won't burn up in your system as quickly as a white flour cracker. That said, there's no reason you can't occassionally have a cracker or two. Just don't nibble on them :>)

Two brands of low glycemic (foods that do not drastically elevate blood glucose) crackers are Ak-Mak 100% Stone Ground Whole Wheat Crackers and Bran-a-Crisp Crackers. I have tried the Ak-Mak. They are not Saltines, but they're not bad, either. 5 good size crackers have 19g of carbs.

Just choose something whole grain. Wasa and Rye-crisp are both good.

Also FYI just a reminder that there is nothing wrong with bread if it is a whole grain (vs. white flour)...saltines are still white flour with a lot of salt so I guess I'd rather nibble a half slice of whole grain bread instead. =:*)

I am 5 weeks post-op and I too try to limit my carbs...but my doctor gave me some paperwork on protein and in there were some sample high protein snacks. The list included 3 crackers with 1oz of low fat cheese, a slice of toast with peanut butter, or crackers with peanut butter. I don't eat the crackers often....and I get filled up fast..but they sure were good. Also, Nature's Own now makes a low carb bread...I think it has 7 carbs per slice and zero sugar. My mom also had the surgery...almost 2 years ago and she was in shock that my surgeon allowed us to eat any carbs...her surgeon told her not too....
