Question:
Will someone PLEASE help me find a good tasting protein bar????
I am 5 months post op and have yet to taste a good protein bar with 15 grams or more of protein. I hate the consistency of your average "bendable" protein bar. Are there any crunchy protein bars out there??? Help!!!! — Cindi S. (posted on July 23, 2003)

Hi Im almost 6 months out, and the only protein bar I can eat are The
balance bars, just check the sugar content on them they are all different!
They have all different flavors I eat one for breakfeast every day as well
as lunch. I get them at Walmart for .97cents a piece. They taste like
candy to me Good luck

Try Detour bars. Totally yummy. Find them at Trader Joes, Walmart, or
health food stores. Mary

of protein and approx 13 grams sugar. Hope this helps. 8/20/03 113 lbs.

I have tried them all and my favorite is the ATKINS ADVANTAGE Protein Bar
in Pralines and Cream...But they are so popular they sell out...Trader Joes
usually has them...Good Luck

Adkins are the best and have the most protein. If you watch the paper they
are on sales somewhere most of the time...the is an ad this week for
walgreens.

Detour bars taste like Snickers. The One Way bar is good too. These are
made by Designer Whey and are delicious. Each bar has 30 gms. of Protein. I
get them at Vitamin Shoppe.

I personally prefer the Balance Gold bars. Make sure you try the GOLD ones,
not the regular Balance bars. My 2 favs are the chocolate peanut butter and
the triple chocolate chaos. They also recently came out with a crunch
version (which I think contains crisped rice, something I personally don't
eat). The Balance Gold bars all have 15gm of protein. They may be a little
high in sugar for some people. But they are something I can eat and will
eat...don't have to force myself. You should also try to find a protein
shake that you will drink consistently and enjoy. I like Champion Nutrition
Pure Whey Stack (chocolate)...it's like my twice (sometimes) three times a
day, glass of chocolate milk. (I prepare mine with water, not milk...an
important factor in shake preparation...don't add calories or milk sugars).

My vote would be for the UTurn Bar, then the DeTour bar. I like the Uturn
the best and use them as meal replacements right now (I'm pre-op). The are
great cold, so keep them in the refrigerator.

U turn and Detour bars are awesome! Buy one at GNC to try it before buying
a whole case. I'm glad you asked this because I didn't know about the
Atkin's bar.
— ZZ S.

I bought a box of 24 bars for $19.01 today at GNC the bars are called
pro-crunch, they are absolutely delish and have 16 grams of protein. give
em a try! ;)

I use to eat atkins bars all the time pre-op. I loved them, but now they
seem a bit calorie dense at 10 weeks post-op, so I haven't tried them. As
far as carbs, they have 2-3 grams of "impact carbs" but watch
out, they have about 23 total carbs. That shocked me when the new lables
came out.

I like the Premier 8 chocolate coconut, which resembles a Mounds bar
(sorta), and the Designer Double Chocolats bar, especially when eaten
together! Both have 30g protein and little or no sugar. BEST SOURCE:
http://shop.store.yahoo.com/esupp/info.html, less than $1 per bar including
shipping! Esupp has almost every protein supplement there is and gives
excellent fast service. No Carbolite bars, though. Sigh.

i hate them all with the exception of ONE that is EAS Advant Edge chocolate
chip brownie YUMMY! you can find them at walmart! good luck

How can a Zone Perfect bar be considered a viable protein bar when it has
between 18 to 24 carbs (of which 12 to 16 of those are SUGAR) and only 14
to 16 grams of protein? Geez, the first ingredient is High
fructose corn syrup. Not trying to pick on anyone or any
product, just can't see that much sugar as being viable to us (or at least
to ME). Just my 2cents.

I have to admit, I gave up on protein bars very early on for two reasons 1)
they tasted crappy and 2) if they tasted better they were full of sugar,
carbs and fat. None of them seemed worth it. The ones without fat and
sugar were -- BLECH!

EAS Advant Edge Chocolate Cream Pie (Yummy) - if I can't find that one I
buy the EAS Advant Edge Chocolate Chip Brownie.

Sorry, but I have to agree with Lisa and Ruth. If you don't mind eating a
lot of carbs and sugar, not to mention the high calories, then there are
some pretty good tasting bars out there. I would rather drink the protein
drinks that are low in carbs and sugar AND calories (compared to the bars).
But, if you don't mind all that, then try some of the bars suggested.
Just be sure to read your labels.

Well, I don't have a protein "bar" for you, but what I can tell
you is that there are these new things called extra tender steak nuggets,
and it's with the beef jerky, however, it's VERY tender, not hard to chew
at all, and for one ounce it only has 70 calories, and 15 grams of protein,
and it tastes awesome. I munch on it throughout the day, and I can have
all my protein for one day in with that, and I don't even notice it. Then
I don't have to worry about choking down a shake or bar, as I have never
liked those things anyway. You might like it!!!

I love the Atkins Choco Mocha Crunch but they do have Carbs just NO SUGAR.
My doctor has us on no sugar so I have to be very careful and read labels.
Some of the Atkins have sugar alcohol which is also a no-no for me. I get
mine from thebetterhealthstore.com - free shipping for orders over $50 but
they won't ship in the summer except on Mondays. You can buy them buy the
box or individually.

Hi there, I don't know if you have Costco Stores where you are but that is
where I get my bars called Premier 1. They were recommended by my
suregeon. They are excellent. They have 31 grams of protein and not at
all gritty or dry. There are 3 flavors to a box- chocolate peanut butter,
double chocolate and yogurt peanut butter. Good luck finding a good one.

You have to try the "STRIVE" bars made by Biochem. I bought a
sample of them on a whim, now all of my post-op friends and I buy them by
the case from Tommy K's Fitness (http://www.tkfitness.com).
They are SUPER crunchy with a light coating. Flavors are Mixed Berry,
S'Mores, and Raspberry Dark Chocolate.
YUM.

My favorite protein bar is the Detour and UTurn bars. They are so great, I
don't even realize I'm eating a Protein bar. Beware, they're big, I can
only eat 1/2 of one at a serving so pace yourself if you decide to try
them.
— Mary A.
July 24, 2003
I have some listed on my profile. The ones that I seem to go back to are
the Atkins bars. In particular the new Smores, the Cappuccino Crunch, and
the Chocolate Coconut. Detour and Uturn bars are OK IF you can tolerate the
sugar, but the Detour bar is so big you'll probably take at least 2
sittings to eat one. If you're looking for something with protein and
crunch to snack on, you might try Genisoy Soy Crisps, which are kind of
like Quakes but made with soy or you can make your own cheese snax (recipe
on my profile) with cheese alone or with peanut butter or nuts. The cheese
snax have the advantage of being high in protein with no carbs or sugars,
so it is a real break from all the sweets stuff.

Too many of you are eating bars with way too much sugar. Why did you have
RNY surgery if you were going to eat right through the weight loss
mechanism of dumping syndrome! Might as well have half of a Hershey bar or
an Almond Joy if you are going to eat a high sugar bar! Do you realize that
you can eat two one-inch cubes of cheese and get 15 grams of protein? Sorry
for the lashing, but there are lots of people out there who gain weight
back because they arent careful of what they put in their mouth. Atkins
bars, Strive Bars, EAS Carb Control, Optimum Nutrition, MetRx Carb Lite are
all excellent bars for RNY people... remember that you are eating them to
add protein to your diets and keep you healthy when it isnt possible for
you to have a meal... or to use as a high protein snack that satisfies a
sweet tooth. ciao, Suze

I have to agree with Kin below, I LOVE ZONE BARS...They taste like a
choclate covered Rice Krispie Treat, I have also recently discovered Atkins
Choc Mocha which I surprising like b/c I don't like an of the other Atkins
bars. But, I have tried all flavors of Zone and like the Mint Choc,
Vanilla Creme, Double Choc, Choc PB, Carmel Peanut Cluster and Fudge
Graham. Heather Open RNY 8-15-02 305/187/150

I'm agreein' with Heather. Atkins' Chocolate Mocha is to die for. It is
chewy like caramel. NO CARBS! Atkins' Pralines and Cream is another good
one. Atkins has a chocolate and Peanut butter one that tastes like Reeses
Peanut Butter cup. NO CARBS!

I don't like any of the protein bars either. Seems like you have to chew
them forever and then they are like chewing tar. Including the U-turn and
Detour. (in my opinion) I have found one that I absolutely love and it is
the Zone Perfect bar. You can get them at Wal-Mart for $.96 each. I adore
the fudge grahm and peanut butter ones, but I found the rest to taste like
protein bars. Worth a try at .96 cents each.

I forgot to add that the Zone Perfect bars are crunchy rice like a
Whatchamacallit candy bar.
