Question:
Ins Co. said that I met all the criteria for surgery.

Except that I needed to be on a medically supervised 12 month diet. Is there a way to avoid this or a way to have them reconsider? I was weight supervised 2 years ago, and went to Curves for a year in 2001-2002.    — Bonnie S. (posted on July 18, 2003)

If your diet was supervised for 12 months by your doctor then you shouldn't have a problem. Maybe they just need some more medical records. There are a lot of insurance companies that are requiring patients to be on a medically supervised diet.

It all depends upon the insurance company. My insurance company required 3, 12 week diets, one of which must have been in the last 12 months. And they wouldn't budge one inch on it. So I did it and was finally approved.

Have you given the insurance company proof of your past supervised diet (medical records or receipts if you used something like Jenny Craig or Weight Watchers, etc)? Also. proof that you went to Curves. I know exactly how you are feeling right now because I was also denied on my first request. I felt like crawling in a hole, but after about 24 hours, I came out of that hole and decided to fight with an appeal. I contacted my insurance and asked how to start the appeal process. I decided that I was going to fight til there was nothing more I could do. I was then approved on appeal. However, if you do decide to appeal, first go to your PCP and get started on that supervised diet. That way, if the appeal doesn't work, you are already a few weeks into the supervised diet. If WLS is your heart's desire, I encourage you not to give up. It may take some time, but I believe your dream will become a reality. God Bless You.
