Question:
I am 8 days out and am worried about a hernia

I had lap rny 8 days ago. I am worried because today I picked up my approx 20-25lb nephew! I wasn't thinking clearly obviously. I didn't experience any pain and held him for about a minute. I am so worried! Is it likely that I will now get a hernia? Please advise:)    — Sasha A. (posted on July 17, 2003)

Nope - just because you picked him up would not cause a hernia. In fact, the chance of a hernia in relation to the laparoscopic RNY is about none. I asked my surgeon just yesterday, in fact, and he said they just separate the muscles with the trocar, not cut them (like in an open procedure) so there should be no hernia. If you are not in pain, absolutely don't worry about it. But of course, don't do it again for a while!
