Before surgery I drank quite a bit of coffee. I am now 4 mos post op and
have had de-caf coffee only 3 times. It doesn't bother me in the least. I
know there are other people out there who absolutely HAVE to have their
caffiene even after surgery. But once I was off it a few days, I stopped
craving it. My mother-in-law can't live without her soda. She is 3 mos post
surgery and simply switched to Diet Coke. Her Dr told her no soda, but she
drinks it anyway and it doesn't sem to bother her with the exception of
giving her "gas".

I was a confirmed Dr. Pepper addict before surgery (at least 2 a day and
none of that diet stuff, either!). Now I hardly ever want a soda. If I just
HAVE to have one, I get a fountain drink one with lots of ice and stir it
vigorously with the straw to get rid of some of the carbonation. It does
make me burp A LOT. I usually end up drinking only a few ounces. I haven't
done this in probably 6 months, though! Sodas just do not taste good to me
anymore. I do drink coffee (about 2 cups a day) and green tea (2 cups a
day). One thing you might do is wean yourself off the caffeine before
surgery so that you don't add a caffeine-withdrawal headache boxcar to the
freight train that hits you when you have surgery! :) I think I started
back on regular coffee when I was released to all foods at 6 weeks.

Before my surgery, I drank at least one coke a day. It was my lunch time
treat. After surgery, I waited for about 6 months before I tried sodas. I
tried a diet vanilla coke and was hooked instantly. Doing without any
sugar for that long made things taste more like regular to me and I don't
seem to miss the regular sodas. Good luck to you, this was the best thing
I ever did for myself.

Not a petty question at all. I was addicted to Diet Pepsi pre-op. Had two
everyday at work then more when I got home. Always ordered it in
restaurants, and only went to movie theatres that served it (hated Coke).
On advice from my surgeon, the month before surgery, I tried to stop all
caffiene, but I still had to have one in the morning to jump start my day.
I haven't tried one since surgery but coming back to work was hard, more
because of the habit than needing the caffiene. I'll probably try it again
some day, but right now I just want to do everything right, so I sip extra
cold water whenever I get an urge for a soda.

the ONLY THING I miss is my coke. I didn't drink alot or even everyday. I
hate diet and the carbination hurts me so there is no substitute. but 9
months and 105 # later, it is a good trade off!

I too was hooked on Pepsi. The very thought of a cold one over ice would
make me go out at midnight to find one. I am now 6 1/2 months post-op. At
6 months, I just wanted to try one to see what I was missing. I took a
small sip. It was not good at all. Actually it was nasty tasting. Your
taste will change. Now I don't even think about it. When someone drinks
one infront of me I just remember how nasty it tasted a few weeks ago.

I have a friend who recently started the Adkins diet. Which, you may or
may not know, doesn't allow you to drink regular soda. I myself am
diabetic and drink diet. I got her hooked on Diet Dr. Pepper. She had a
regular Pepsi the other day because she had done so well on her diet. She
said it wasn't as good as she had expected. She didn't even finish the
soda! Anyhow, I know you wanted to hear from people that didn't have a
change in taste, but really, try the Diet Dr. Pepper, I love it!

Before surgery it was nothing for me to put away a 6 pk of 24 oz regular
pepsi. I was a junkie LOL> Now I drink Propel fitness water (its
flavored) and sometimes I will order a fountain diet pepsi (not as much
fizz I think as bottles or cans). I bet I have drank maybe 5 glasses of
fountain pop since surgery. I stick with the propel water instead. Its
good, Jamie Post op 13 weeks and -73 lbs

I just wanted to say that if I were you and know what I know now after
surgery....I would be drinking whatever and how many ever I wanted to
drink. I had my last meal every night for almost 3 weeks hearing that I
wouldn't get things I loved anymore. How true is that saying. I tried
Vanilla Dr. Peppers about a month after surgery and just can't handle the
carbonation. I drink decaffienated tea all the time. That is the only thing
I drink anymore. That is my only water intake. Good luck on your weight
losee surgery and the future on keeping the weight off.

My doc says I can still have a modest amount of caffeine, but to try keep
it down. Your body is certainly addicted to it! (Mine too!) The
carbonation will just not work out. I can tell you that your taste will
change - have you ever been on a diet long enough that you actually
preferred Diet Coke over regular? That happened on two diets to me, and it
was tough to get back to the real thing, but I managed to do it ! :)
Anyway, your caffeine addiction is something you should start trying to cut
down on now - Cold turkey will make your body (and you) feel just awful. I
have forgotten caffeine a couple days in a row on a few ocassions and felt
so sick - I realized my body was going through withdrawal. My nutritionist
even said that I could have tea or coffee in my postop time in the hospital
if I was an addict - just to keep it low - because she didn't want me going
through withdrawal right after surgery to compound my postop pain, etc.
One cup of Pepsi a day isn't too much - can you start switching to tea? Or
maybe caffeine free Pepsi - something that is just a step away from what
you're used to, so that you can slowly step over to less caffeine and no
carbonation?
I personally am a SUPER TEA drinker. I have tea that has tons of sugar and
is plenty strong. When people have tried my tea they have ALWAYS had
something to say - and I usually warn them ahead of time. I hadn't seen a
dentist in 2 years and I type for a living, so I would sip, sip my tea all
day long. Well I managed to get 9 cavities in this time period from my
beloved tea. I guess when you don't have food at the same time as drinks,
there is not enough saliva to keep the drink diluted so all my teeth are
rotting at the gum lines. This will cost me about $3000 to fix. I've had
7 fixed, and will have to wait until next year for the other two - but I
tell you - I don't sip on tea anymore - just with meals. When I'm in a bad
mood, though, I will turn to my tea, just like other comfort foods. It
will be hard to live without it. I plan to go to caffeine-free tea bags at
50/50 before going all the way.
Psychologically it will still be hard for us, but now is the time to get
prepared.

Life after Pepsi? You've got to be kiddint! lol There will never be an
after for me! I still enjoy diet pop, and the very occassional regular. I
enjoy the diet more as I put artifical sweetner in it to take out the fiz
and make it taste better. It's always best to drink water, but having a
flattened diet pop is'nt going to hurt much. As far as it possibly
expanding the pouch, I suppose if you were to drink it really fast (and not
burp) that you could. But drinking even flattened pop fast would be painful
and I don't think any of us would even want to because of the pain. I
actual enjoy the "flattened" pop now and it is a real
"treat". It is'nt a "must have" like before surgery
because as other have said, your tastes will change. But don't feel you
have to go without.

HI DEBRA!
I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL. I KNEW THAT GIVING UP SODA WOULD BE HARD, BUT AFTER
MY DR EXPLAINED HOW YOU FEEL IF YOU DRINK IT, I DECIDED I BETTER START
PREPARING NOW (SURGERY 9/8/03) I AM HAPPY TO SAY THAT I AM ONE WEEK OUT
WITH NO COFFEE, NO SODAS, ETC. WHEN I GET A CRAVING, I JUST GRAB WATER,
AND IT REALLY HELPS. SOON I DISCOVERED THAT MY CRAVING WAS FOR WATER. I
HOPE THIS HELPS.

LIFE AFTER PEPSI YOU ASK? YOU MUST BE KIDDING RIGHT? I AM 5MTHS OUT TODAY
(2/18/03 LAP RNY 295-216) I STILL ENJOY A DIET PEPSI FROM TIME TO TIME AND
LIKE THE PREVIOUS POSTER, SOMETIMES A REGULAR. PRE-OP I PROBABLY HAD 3 TO
4 20oz a day. NOW I MAY HAVE A 12oz PERHAPS TWICE A WEEK. I RARELY FINISH
HALF OF IT. I BELIEVE IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE INDIVIDUAL. I HAVE HAD NO
COMPLICATIONS WHATSOEVER. ONCE OR TWICE A MONTH, I MAY HAVE A MORNING
PERIOD OF STOMACH UPSET. NOTHING SEVERE. I JUST HAVE NOT NARROWED DOWN
WHAT'S CAUSING IT. I USALLY HAVE A CRACKER AND IT GOES AWAY.
GOOD LUCK ON YOUR JOURNEY

I didn't drink a lot of sodas pre-op but enjoyed 2-3 each week. I have
craved Coke since surgery but haven't tried one. However, I have gotten a
Coke Slurpee and have really enjoyed that a couple of times. I got a small
one, which, ironically, costs more than the 44oz. size! ha Anyway, the
small one lasts me about 2 days. I sip it a little at a time so I don't
dump and the cold icy feeling feels really good in my tummy!

Debra, I was a big time Pepsi addict, Pepsi One, Diet Pepsi, didnt matter
as long as it was Pepsi.
I am 6 months out and have continuous tried to drink Pepsi One or the diet
version. I am giving it up for two reasons: 1. caffeine dehydrates you
and considering our malabsorption issues water is vital to our well being.
and 2. fortunately or unfortunately, depending on your point of view, I
dump on Pepsi One and diet Pepsi. A real Pepsi makes me wish I was dead.
That's the skinny on it for me.
