Question:
other than creamed soup, creamed cereal, pudding, broth and jello- what is there?

I had a vbg a week ago. Campbell soups already are a chore to eat. And just how much of them should I eat at a meal?    — Janie I. (posted on July 2, 2003)

Does your surgeon allow "creamed soups on the clear liquid diet if this is what you are on. Those cream soups are considered FULL liquids. Clear liquids are the BROTHs. Also you might want to try some sugar-free popcicles. There is not a whole lot to choose from at this phase. Good luck on your surgery.

Many Drs. send you home from the hospital on either full liquids or purees like mine did. If your Dr says it's ok, the soups are fine. I had them in the hospital. Are you working with a nutritionist?? That person may be able to give you more ideas of what you can eat now. Good luck! It gets better soon!!!

If you're on FULL liquids, you may have crackers and tortilla chips. Anything that will disolve in liquid completely is ok for full liquids - but still chew them well. I know, their carbs, but when your hungry, your HUNGRY and they tasted great early on! On full liquids we were allowed squeeze cheese and/or creamy peanut butter on crackers. Check with your doc if this is allowed for you!

Hummus! It saved my life in the immediate post-op period. I ate it by itself (no crackers or pita bread) but it had enough flavor to satisfy and sat well in my tummy. A quarter of a cup (which I ate over two or three meals since I could only manage a tiny bit at a time) contains about 105 calories, three grams of protein and about five grams of fat. You can make your own by pureeing canned garbanzo beans with a bit of garlic and lemon juice and leave out the tahini for a lower fat version. I discovered that you can make it with black beans as well...just be sure to really puree it well.

Fat-free refried beans are another possibility -- you can always add water if they're too think for you, and melt a little cheese in them. I also ate low-fat ricotta cheese with a little (I mean a *little*!) tomato sauce thrown in.

I was allowed 1/2 cup blended beef vegetable soup during my first stage after surgery. I had an open RNY so I'm not familiar with your post-op diet protocol. I know it's soup but blending up the soft pieces really make a difference.

I lived on instant grits mixed with cream of mushroom soup for my 2 week liquid phase. Both were on my list of approved foods. Good luck!

Janie...I had LAP RNY, but when I was in my full liquids stage, I ate the Campbells Bean and Bacon soup alot..I would make it as directed, and let it cook for alittle longer than usual to soften the beans up even more. They were very mushy and gave me something the "chew", even though I could've just mashed with my tongue or pureed alittle. I also ate grits, cottage cheese (mash it with a fork pretty good to break up the curds alittle), and what you're already eating - jello, s/f pudding, cream soups, etc...Good luck! Denise 316/153
