Question:
I need help on this one!!
I am 6 days post op, and I get 2 different stories about my 6wks post op LIQUID diet. The hospital dietitian that works the wls program with my Dr., says no to mashed potatoes and the nurse at the Dr.'s office says anything I can put into a blender I can eat. There are other examples that I can give but to safe time I will explaine more if emailed. I am drinking about every hour, anything from beef broth to sugar free pudding, to CIB. Any thoughts???? I am not sure who I would follow on that one. Have not had surgery yet but
have now been to the dietician. The dietitian says the doctor says to use
any diet that is high protein and low carb. She, herself, says that she
wants calories counted regardless of the carbs. I am leaning towards what
the doctor says when I see him a week before surgery. My dietitian says
acceptable full liquids are: light fat freed blended yogurt (Yoplait Fat
Free Light. Key Lime, vanilla, Boston Cream), sugar free pudding, pat free
Lactaid milk, plain soymilk (Silk or Sunsoy) and thinned hot cereal (grits,
cream of wheat or oatmeal) and of course plenty of water and protein. I
hope this helps.

Cheryl, I think I would call your surgeon for clarification. I would be
inclined to follow the dietician's instructions. If you just go ahead and
blend anything you want....you could be looking at high carbs, fat and
calories. I know some people don't count the carbs, fat and
calories.....but if you go and throw in a slice of pizza for
example....there is very little nutrional value....we should be learning
how to eat good now.....to loose the wieght and keep it off in the long
run. I would follow the nutrionist's advice not the nurse (I can't believe
I am saying that...I am a nurse..LOL) Good luck to you......and call your
doc, ask to speak with him!!! If you still have doubts!!!!

Jennifer is 100% right! You need to focus on keeping the carbs low-- this
is tough b/c you need the CIB for the nutrition so you need to be extra
vigilent about cutting down on the starches. I had pretty quick and
sustained weightloss using the CIB with skim milk the first couple of
months (I would have it every other day), lots of soft scrambled eggs,
cottage cheese and broth; as a result I've dropped 233 pounds in 8 1/2
months. Also, I would avoid the sugar free pudding-- you can get your
calcium from so many other sources that are better for you. The food
choices are limited and that could get boring, but fortunately you have the
opportunity to completely re-adjust your relationship with food during
these early weeks where it becomes essentially purely utilitarian.
Good luck.

It sounds like the dietitian is talking about a LIQUID diet while the
doctor's office is talking about a PUREED diet. I think for most people
these are separate stages (at least they were for me). I think it's common
to go from clear liquids to full liquids then to pureed food, then to soft
food, then to whatever you can tolerate (the amount of time at each stage
seems to vary widely by program). I think it will help you to clarify with
both the dietitian and the doctor's office when you are supposed to be on
what stage.

I'm with Vespa. I did the clear liquid, full liquid, pureed then soft
before the general diet. All I know is carbs are way too filling. I THINK
I want the rice or potatoes, but the tummy sure doesn't. Soon you go with
your tummy. I no longer crave or desire those carby foods. And boy was I
a carb eater before WLS. This surgery has given me all it was promised.
My problem was portion control. Fortunately, I was never a snacker, so I
don't have that habit to break. My head still tells me I want LOTS of
food, but it doesn't work and I am glad.
I think following the food plan my doctor set down made it possible for me
to get through the first few months without ever being sick. Sometimes I
think if you 'jump the gun' you create problems for yourself....like
dumping. Open RNY 10/30/02 down 166 lbs.

When you move to puree stage I would stay away from mashed potatoes unless
you prtien fortify them with protien powder or dry milk...they offer little
by way of nutrition for us...They are almost straight carbs. Also, you said
that you were drinking broth or s/f pudding every hour or so. You should
limit your caloric meal/drinks to 6 times a day. other than that you should
be drinking just non-caloric drinks like water of fruit 2 o. If you don't
make this change now you will not be able to lose the weight as easily.
