Question:
just wondered how do the Real Meal Protein drinks taste.
I hear a lot of people use the real meal protein drinks and just wondered how they taste? And can you only order them on line or has anyone found them in any stores?? — Tammy O. (posted on June 20, 2003)

Real Meals are like any other protein shake. Some people love them and
some can't stand them. I don't know if you can get samples, but that's
usually a good way to try out some protein shakes to see what you like.
Also, if you're still pre-op, it's good to remember that something you like
now may not taste good to you at all after your surgery.

you can buy samples of Real Meals. I bought one each of Vanilla and
Chocolate. I didn't like the Vanilla and it made me throw up so I am
saving the Chocolate until I am a little further out....maybe it will sit
better with me then. I am having the hardest time with my protein.

You can get samples. I spoke with the company and you get a pouch of the 2
flavors for $5.99+ shipping. I am pre-op and will be trying them but like
the last post I might not have the same tastes after surgery.

I just got my sample pack one vanilla, one chocolate but haven't had a
chance to try them yet. I also got the small bottle of vitamins. It took
a little over a week to get it once I mailed in my order. It's probably
faster if you e-mail your order and pay by credit card.

I tried the real meals (sample pack) chocolate. It was ok, but a little
chalky. I am preop, but if it is a matter of getting my protein in easily,
i will try to drink it everyday. As long a my stomach will allow it to go
in.

I just tried the chocolate flavor yesterday. I am preop. I liked it. It was
a lot sweeter than the other drinks I have tried and did not have a nasty
aftertaste. I hope I still like it postop because I ordered a big box full!

if you go to 'gallery' on the home page, go to 'reviews' you can see lots
of opinions on the real meals. i found them way too sweet, sickingly sweet,
can not handle them blah!

I like vanilla better than chocolate...till today...I put 3 ice cubes in
blender w/ 6 oz fat free milk and 1 tsp instant coffee and had a yummy
mocha shake....Not as good as the real thing but it was good...my husband
didn't like it...order a sample.

As we all have different tastebuds, you will get all different answers.
Personally, I HATED IT...NASTY! However, what you might enjoy or like
early pre-op may change as you are farther along. Heather(Open RNY 8-15-02

I find Real Meals tolerable. I tried mixing 1/2 a pouch in about 4 oz of
water and could get it down, then I mixing it with skim milk - ugh, too
thick and chalky! I found that mixing 1/2 packet with about 6-8 oz of cold
water and crushed ice made it easier to get down - not thick and not as
sweet. (I still like Sci-Fit better!)

I think it's a personal thing so you might want to try them and not go by
what other people think of them. However, the shipping for the samples can
be expensive (I found the shipping cost as much as the samples so maybe you
can talk to someone in the company about that) but someone on this site
sent me some and I'm glad she did. Real Meals have been the only protein
drink that I've ever actually gagged on. Some others I find intolerable
after a few sips but nothing else had me spitting it out. One caveat:
since surgery I can only tolerate fruit based drinks (I think I've tried
everything at this point) or Designer Whey Natural with fruit added. So
your mileage may vary.

I have been drinking them post op for 5 months and I like them a lot. I
could not handle the chocolate early on but drink them now. I make fruit
smoothies with the vanilla and add some chocolate syrup to the chocolate. I
actually don't find them chalky at all. They mix up very easily and are
small in volume making them easy to drink from the beginning. I would order
samples and try them all post op. I liked the chocolate pre op as did my 12
year old son actually but post op I had to do the vanilla for a couple of
months. The quality is what attracted me and is what keeps me drinking them
even now. As someone else said it is all trial and error with shakes
because everyone likes something different.

The Real Meals taste okay to me, but everyone's tastebuds are different. I
will say this for them, they saved me in France. I took along enough packs
for every day and a shaker bottle so I would be sure to get in enough
protein while there. I can't handle food in the a.m. hours plus the French
are a carb happy bunch and the Real Meals were a really convenient way to
travel and still get in my protein without worry. I did get searched and
questioned at the airport about though and I had to battle to get ice every
morning to make it drinkable, but they are really convenient . I've never
seen them in a store however. I wish they were available locally to save on
shipping costs.

Real Meals are great. New post-ops are only suppose to mix about 3 tbs and
4 oz of H2O or skim milk. If you do this once a day the sample (7 day
supply) will last fro 28 days. I personally LOVE the vanilla. I have 2
shakes a day (total 1/2 packet) I mix mine with 4oz skim milk, 2
strawberries or 1 tbs of fatfree, sugarfree chocolate syrup, 1 packet of
splenda, 5 ice cubes and blend the heck out of it in the blender. It tastes
like a milk shake to me. Each shake is very filling, loaded with protein,
low carbs, and low calorie. I use these because I have a hard time figuring
out what to eat and sometimes I even forget to eat. So this helps. Good
luck-like everyone says- it is a personal choice.

I think they are gross. My sister bought them and I tried them. She even
thinks they are hard to handle. She tried everything to try to spark up the
flavor. Just our experience though.
