Question:
Could the Sonagram be wrong?

I know someone just asked about gallstones. But I have a question a little different. I was wonder if anyone had a normal abdominal sonagram during the pre- op test and later found out they had gallstones while they were in surgery and your surgeon took your gallbladder. I was just curious to if a sonagram can not always show everthing and then later when you are opened up and they can see them. I have been havinfg symtoms of gallstones. My test came back normal.    — Just P (posted on June 18, 2003)

Sonograms are not perfect. Only getting in there and looking at the gall bladder up close and personal is the only way to be 100% accurate. Even then, there is room for human error.

I have personally not heard of an ultrasound showing no stones, but they were present on surgery. I have seen lots of cases where the gallbladder was diseased and needed to be removed, even without actual stones. But, either way, be glad its gone - it will save you plenty of problems down the road to be rid of it!

I had gall bladder symptoms for years. Had 2 ultrasounds over a 2 year period, one came back ok, the second showed what they thought was "sludge". Dr said not to worry, gave me an anti-spasmodic. Another year later, another ultrasound, nothing. After doubling over in pain for 2 days, went to emer room, was taken into surgery next a.m. Surgeon said stone size of egg. So large, the ultrasound showed just a shadow which they presumed was sludge. This was while I was trying to get approved for wls. My doc had planned to take it out during the wls as a safety measure.
