Question:
Anyone not like sugar free foods before surgery?
I have been trying diffrent sugar free foods and I can honestly say I HATE every single one (from yogurt to jello they all have a funny taste to me). Will my tastebuds change after surgery? Will I eventually learn to like there foods? Your insight would be appreciated. — TIFFANY B. (posted on June 18, 2003)

Hi, I can honestly say that I did not like sigar free anything before
surgery. I felt like I was missing something. Now I am 8 days postop and
LOVE it! And since I really can't eat alot I am not missing anything.

I don't mind sugarfree stuff now. I NEVER liked sugarfree before. Things
seem more sweeter to me post WLS. I'm not a dumper, but too much sugar
is...well, TOO MUCH! Your tastes WILL change after surgery. Will you LOVE
sugarfree? Maybe, maybe not. Listen carefully to your body. This works!
Open RNY 10/30/02 and down 160 lbs.

Well I'm sure everyones tastes are different, but I couldn't stand s/f
stuff as a pre op, and I STILL don't care for most of it at nearly 10 weeks
post op. I HATE s/f Koolaid, and Crystal Light!! I can "tolerate"
s/f yogurt, jello, etc. occasionally. I DO like s/f chocolates, but can
only eat a teeny bit before it starts to make me feel icky. Who knows,
maybe you'll LOVE the stuff!! :o)

I am pre-op, but I am a type II diabetic, in 1992, when I was dianosted
with diabetes, I changed to sugar free everything, I hated it at first,
then I started to find some things that were not to bad, the choices of s/f
stuff on the market now is great. A big hint, do not get stuff that is fat
free, it is loaded with sugar, they have to make it taste good some how.
There is hidden sugar in almost everything, but from what I have heard from
post-ops, keep the sugar under 6gms. I hope that some of this helps, I
think you need to keep trying different s/f stuff, until you find something
you can enjoy.

HI!! I gotta tell ya, when I started out 2 yrs ago w/the s/f foods (I found
out I was diabetic) I HATED IT too. BUT once u deal w/it for a little while
it grows on ya. I have found these items to be VERY good: Wylers S/F
lemonade (make it with just a little less water than it asks for or it
tastes watery, otherwise it is FABU), S/F pudding chocolate or banana
creme(made w/skim milk, stirred VERY WELL get all the lumps out), S/F
cookies from walmart I found to be descent too. You just gotta keep doin
it. I can absolutely NOT drink regular soft drinks now they taste like pure
syrup, so it does eventually happen!!!
Best of Luck!!

Hi Tiffany: I am 2 yrs post op and down #148, from a size 28 to a size 7.
My weight only flexuates 2 pounds either way depending on the time of the
month. I have NEVER had anything sugar free or with those terrible
artificial sweeteners...the artificial sweetener makes me dump something
awful.....I had distal RNY and am not afraid of sugar at all....I don't do
extremes, but I put 2 sugars in my ice tea, if I want a cookie or cake, I
have it...Don't be afraid of sugar, just watch the amounts that you
intake...I didn't have this surgery to stay on a diet of sugar free
"crappy" stuff for the rest of my life....My dr. says eat what we
want just in moderation.....

Never liked sugar free. Still don't. I find most of it is 'too
sweet'...never thought I would say that! The only thing I occasionally
like is SF/FF pudding. I've made it twice since my surgery, 1/31/03, and
have eaten one or two 1/4 - 1/3 cup servings and ended up throwing the rest
away.

I absolutly DETEST just about anything s/f. I'm not even very fond of
splenda. I don't do s/f anything. Can't stand the taste or aftertaste, and
makes me dump. What I do to get my water in, is take 20 oz of water, 2 oz
applejuice, and a pinch of salt. If I make anything that calls for sugar,
I substutite itwith splenda, and then don't eat but just a bit or two. I
stay away from artifical sweetners, and stick to foods I like, and if I get
a notion for something sweet, I get a balance bar and have a few bites. I'd
be in a world of hurt if I was diabetic....

Splenda isn't too bad, but it's hard to bake with because it doesn't have
the bulk/volume that regular sugar does. I use fructose or turbinado
sugar, which are both natural sugars and don't have aftertastes. See my
profile or www.freewebs.com/recipes-after-rny for sample recipes and
ordering information for the book. I've done a LOT of experimenting and I
can make things that no one knows doesn't have regular sugar in it....like
a killer strawberry-rhubarb pie! Good luck to you!

I swore off white sugar and artificial sweetners (ok, except for th
occasional oatmeal raisen cookie and donut) years ago. I find unsweetened
tea and using honey to sweeten things like oatmeal and as pancake topping
is just fine. The fewer chemicals the better I say...
