Question:
Need support from pre-ops who have weight loss requirement pror to surgery
My surgery is schedule with Dr. Duncan and I need to loose 40 pounds (lost 10 so far) by August 21st. I've been trying to do this on my own with exercise and diet but I am failing miserably. If anyone is in the similar situation and would like to get a little support group going for this specific purpose please email me. [email protected] — vesta D. (posted on June 16, 2003)

I need to lose 30. Down 14 so far. I have been trying to lead a
completely regimented life. SlimFast Shake for breakfast, turkey in syrian
pocket for lunch with diet coke, grilled chicken breast and salad for
dinner. Lowfat yogurt or slimfast snack bars between meals.
Things that have helped
Forman Grill (fat drains off)
Maple Farms Calorie Free Salad Dressing
Simply Smart 0% milk (tastes like 2%)
I fight the battle everyday and am far from perfect. But if I fail today I
do not allow it to enable me to fail tomorrow. Lets keep in touch!

This is the diet the nutritionist gave me when I went in for my
consultation. It is 1500 calories a day and what they recommended for me.
Here's the link for the 1200 calories a day too:

Good luck on your weight loss and your journey.

Hi Vesta- May I suggest the Atkins Induction diet? It worked very well for
me, unfortunately the minute I went off of it I gained all the weight and
then some. You will have to read the book "Dr Atkins New Diet
Revolution". Good Luck!

Hi Vesta, Duncan was my surgeon. I have read that he requires a weight
loss now prior to surgery. Just curious, do you know why? Good Luck to
you!

My doc also required the pre weight loss, 10% of your EXCESS
weight. I used the Atkins, no soda (diet or reg) lots of water and add some
walking daily. Remember its your last diet AND this won't come back like
before. GOOD LUCK!

I have my surgery on August 6th. My surgeon requires that I lose weight
before surgery, he did not tell me how much. The reason for the weight loss
in it helps shrink the liver, and I have heard that my surgeon wants his
patients to lose 10%. I had a scare with my liver just before I had my
first consult, and I had resent blood work showing that my liver emzimes
were normal, that is why I think he told me just to lose some weight. It
is so hard to lose the weight, that is why we need the tool to help us. I
have lost 5 lbs, and only have 50 days left before surgery, I am finding it
a battle, but I am determined, I do not want him to cancel my surgery, just
because I did not lose weight. I lost 10 lbs before I went to see him but
he is not counting that, I will probley go on a liquid diet the week before
the pre-op testing, that is were you get weighed in, I excercise, and have
cut my intake back to almost NO carbs, and drink a protein shake everyday
and alot of water, but the stress this is causing is bad. I think it is so
unfair to put this much stress on someone that is having WLS. Email me if
you would like.

My Surgeon's requirements are a 15 pound weight loss, I am there I have
lost 18 lbs just from doing the low carb diet, I was working out and losing
slowly so I stoped for two weeks and lost the rest of what I needed, now I
am back to three days a week working out. It been two months or 1 1/2 if
you dont count those two weeks, but I have lost 12 inches by working out,
Dont give up keep trying it will come , I think this is the hardest 15
pounds I ever had to loose. Good Luck

Vesta: I don't understand why some of these docs insist on us losing
weight first. If we were able to do it on our own, we wouldn't be having
surgery, right? I guess it could have something to do with insurance, and
making the patient lower-risk prior to surgery. My son's (who weighed 442
at time of surgery) and my surgeon did not require any weight loss prior,
although my doc will cancel me if I'm more than 5 pounds over the weight I
was at my consult. Currently I'm about 7 to 8 pounds over, and am working
on losing that by lowering my general intake of food, and trying to eat
less sugar. I've been tracking my daily intake on fitday.com, and it's
been helpful. It's like keeping a food journal, only a little easier, as
the food contents are figured out for you automatically by the program.
Recording everything you eat is a real eye-opener, and if you haven't tried
it, I would highly recommend that. I am also an Atkins veteran, and can
tell you if you follow it strictly (induction level), you could lose a good
bit of weight fairly quickly. I lost about 18 pounds in 3 weeks when I was
on it. Good luck to you, and know there are others out here who "feel
your pain."

Original poster: Thanks for the support. I guess it's just the stress and
difficulty of it all and the worst part of it is that I am stressing myself
out so much that I am literally eating more. But I know I have to do this.
I understand why surgeons require this but it doesnt make it any easier.
Loosing weight prior to surgery especially on protien diets shrinks the
liver and excersice prior to surgery helps overall recovery post op. I
will continue to do the no-carb high protien and see. Thanks again for the
words of encouragement. Vesta
