Question:
Which anti-depressant works best for long term post ops?

I am 12 months post op. For the last 14 years, I have been off and on various anti-depressants, such as prozac, welbutrin, zoloft, and effexor. I am currenlty on prozac. Does anyone have an opinion as to which anti-depressant works best for long term post ops?    — juvpd (posted on June 9, 2003)

I think this is highly subjective...what works for you as a post-op may not work well for another post-op. I don't think the efficacy of an anti-depressant has anything to do with being post-op (or not)...although some have said the extended release formalas don't work as well for GB patients because they weren't developed for people with altered absorption. The only other thing I can offer is that I've read a few posts about Paxil being a weight-gainer type of anti-D, which some may want to avoid. I've been on Zoloft for years...pre and post-op. It still seems to be doing its job just as well post-op as it did pre-op. Hugs, Joy

As for antidepressants, I've tried them all....not post op yet though. The Paxil "packed" on the pounds, which I am now trying to loose. I actually lost on Wellbutrin, but my doc said to go on that would be a problem now. He did mention some are coming in liquid form and that is what he would prescribe for me if I felt I needed something. Lexapro is a new drug that seems to be all the rage, so I might suggest you research that on RXLIST.com. (I find by doing that you know more about the drug than the doc) Like mine kept telling me the Paxil did not cause weight gain, well after 30 pounds he was embarrassed to say studies were being done on this very subject. Stay away from Remerin.....major appetite booster!

You have recieved good info here. I just would like to comment on the Lexapro. Yes, it is the new wonder-drug of anti-depressants. I did not find it to be so. In 2 1/2 months of taking Lexapro, I gained almost 30 pounds. Also watch your thought patterns. I experienced suicidal and racing thoughts while on the Lexapro. Always be vigilant about adverse reactions. Research carefully and watch how your body and mind reacts to what you are taking. Good luck. :)

Hi Jeannie, I've been on Celexa for years and so far it is working well.I tried coming off of them and in about a month and a half I started feeling very angry with the world and everyone around me and started not sleeping again at night so I'm back on and I feel great now. So I know it works otherwise I would be miserable. 13 months ago I had my RNY and I've lost 101lbs.and I'm still loosing.
