Question:
Just wondering if anyone (post-op) drinks Gatorade?

I wanted to get some feedback about drinking Gatorade post-op. I'm 3 weeks out and not able to get all the fluids in that I should. I wanted to try drinking Gatorade but was wondering about the sugar content and if anyone had any problems with dumping after drinking it.    — Kimberly B. (posted on June 5, 2003)

trader Joes sells a water called 'smart water' it has everything in it that gatoraid does except the sugar and flavorings. you can add what ever you wish yourself. but i understand they make a sugar free gatoraid now. that should be okay to drink, i would not drink regular, too much sugar. good luck

When I was newly post-op my surgeon recommended diluting it but now 7 months post-op I drink it whole all the time with no problems. (but then I hardly dump on anything) Good luck.

I drink Gatorade. I love it. It really isn't all that grams of sugar compared to juice. My doctor and nutritionist said that Gatorade is good for a person to drink right after having this surgery...especially if you have problems getting your full required intake. It has kept me from getting dehydrated...and I've had a tough time getting the full 64 ounces in a day. So, Gatorade has worked for my thus far. Good luck!

I just had to answer!! I was sitting down, clicking on Q&A postings, shaking my Gatorade and ready to sip when your question came into view. :) I drink Gatorade all the time, water can get so boring sometimes. They have so many flavors to choose from. Fruit juices sometimes taste too sugary to me. It's a great alternative. :)

I prefer Propel (made by the same company). Never cared for the taste of Gatorade, so no idea how I'd do on it.

Watch out, with Gatorade and other drinks... too much sodium. It is like everything else, balance it out. I drink Gatorade, propel, and all kinds of waters, including tap water. lol... just watch the sodium... it can mess with your body chemistry too much and give you high blood pressure or water retention. I vary my drinks hourly. I'll drink a glass of milk, then tap water, then juice, then propel, then milk, gatorade, sugar free popsicles (bomb pops are GREAT!), etc. Just don't get stuck on one thing at a time... your body can't handle so much sodium, and the boring repition!! :~)

Propel and Gatorade are nutritionally VERY different - Sodium in Gatorade is 102.5 mg per 250 ml serving...Propel has only 35 mg of sodium per 240 ml serving. Gatorade 15.8 carbs compared to Propel at 3 grams. And Propel has more potassium (40 mg compared to 29.5). The biggest difference is in calories - Gatorade has 65 calories while Propel has only 10! While I agree water is best, Propel far out-weighs Gatorade.

I am four months post op and up until a couple of weeks ago drank gatorade constantly. It did not hinder my weight loss one bit. Dilute with a bit of water and put on ice to lessen the sugar content. Surgeon gave me the ok to keep drinking it. LAP RNY 1/28/2003. Down 83lbs.
