Question:
Sleep comfortably in your bed

I have read that a lot of post op slept in a recliner. How long aafter the surgery were you able to sleep comfortably in your own bed? Was you able to sleep on your stomach?    — Just P (posted on May 23, 2003)

I couldn't lie down flat for about 3 weeks or so after the surgery. I had a hard time breathing. I saved my money and found a clean 1/2-3/4" thick plywood board to prop the head of my bed up. This worked like a charm and saved some $$. <p>Take Care, Be Well, Be Happy!

about 2 and 1/2 weeks in the recliner because I'm a side sleeper and it took that long to rest comfortably on my side. I don't sleep on my stomach at all because it's bad for the neck, so I cuddle a body pillow to keep from rolling over.

Hi Sheree, I was in bed the very day I got home from the hospital. Of course, I had every pillow in the house behind me so I wouldn't sleep completely flat. I also had someone help me in and out of bed for the first 3 days after I got home. After a week home I gradually went to my side and it is still a chore to get in that position. Like you, I am also a stomach sleeper. Listen to your body. You will know when it is comfortable to sleep on your stomach. Good Luck with your up coming surgery!!

In hospital for 2 days (lap RNY). I was in my own bed the day I came home. Slept wonderfully every since. Was on my right side the first night and on stomach within a few days. I didn't plan it this way, it just happened (luckily). Best wishes!

I could not sleep in the recliner. I went into my bed the second night. I slept on a ton of pillows of all different firmnesses and sizes (from squishy feathers to extra firm of all different sizes). I slept propped up and managed to turn on my side with a pillow between my legs and along my tummy because I can't sleep on my back. I used the different types of pillows to prop things up, support things, make things softer etc. depending on what was needed where. The different firmnesses also helped me change things up as needed. It helped me to not only sleep in my own bed but also sleep for more than a couple of hours at a time.

I slept in my own bed my first night home, and I also slept on my side just a day or two later. After a week, I was sleeping on my stomach (my preferred position). I didn't have any discomfort.
