Question:
How can I get rid of this horrible taste in my mouth (due to ketosis I assume)?

HI--my breath hasn't been that bad post-op (ummmm...at least I don't THINK so!), but I really like the Listerine Pocket Paks when I need a quick de-stinker. They really do the trick with a big blast of mint.

I start everyday by brushing my tongue (along with my teeth of course) and then gargling with mint Listerine. That helps a lot. I also keep Listerine strips in my purse, along with breathsavers. . .and I'm not afraid to use them!!!

My dentist gave me some mouth rinse and tongue scrapers that helped. Drint lots of water too. It will pass.

Keytosis breath is the sweet smell of success! HOWEVER, I agree it can put a damper on your social life and personal sense of wellbeing. As well as brushing your teeth, tongue, and rinsing, as suggested by the other posters, try pure peppermint oil, available from many health food/natural products shops. One drop of this on your tongue does the trick. It is also good for headaches (try a drop behind each ear for headaches), colds, clogged sinuses, and a bunch of other things. Another nice mouth refresher I love is Toms of Maine Ginger-Mint toothpaste, because I LOVE ginger, and it leaves a lovely taste in my mouth for a long time. make sure you eat greens (for the chorophyll) and drink lots of water! best wishes--Terry

The taste in your mouth is definitely ketosis-- when it is in gear, it will also distort your tastes. Initially, I drank a ton of water constantly throughout the day to try to wash some of it away-- but the problem is that the ketones are resident in your saliva so they are always present. Also, I tried to orient myself that different types of food were no longer going to be in my mouth constantly (and particularly that I would no longer be having a steady stream of sweet things in my mouth). Now that I am seven months, I have started chewing sugarless gum which seems to help with the ketosis breath but hasn't done much to improve the ketones' impact on my taste buds.

There is a product called Devrom that was developed specifically for bariatric patients. It's a capsule or chewable tablet (I use the capsules) that you take with each meal. It is an internal deodorant. It eliminates bad breath associated with ketosis and also eliminates foul odors of bowel movements and "tooting". It's GREAT! It's $15.00 for a one month supply and you can call MCE Apothecary at 205-838-3130 and order it over the phone. Best wishes to you!
