Question:
Has anyone gotten a rash from their binder?

I am six days post-op and my surgeon requires me to wear a binder, but I sweat underneath it and it causes a rash, so I haven't been wearing it as much as I'm supposed to. Did anyone else experienced this and what did you do?    — Amanda S. (posted on May 17, 2003)

This sounds pretty normal, especially if its getting warmer where you live. Try wearing a lite T-shirt under your binder, between your skin and the binder. I think this will reaaly help get you thru the worst of it. I hope I could be of some help, Good Luck with your Weight Loss.

I did and opened it up when I was sitting down in a relaxed position. Then I'd put it back on before I stood up. Helped a lot. The most important thing is to wear it when you are going to do ANYTHING that could strain your incision.

OMG, did I ever get a rash!! See the pics link on my profile for a pic (and I have more but didn't post them)! It was beyond horrible. I'm sorry I have to disagree with the previous poster about continuing to wear it. I broke out on day 3 with mine while I was still in the hospital and never wore my binder again. Now I don't know if mine was strictly a heat rash or a combination of me being allergic to the plastic in the elastic, as it was my first experience with a binder. Does your surgeon know about your rash? If not please inform him/her and get meds for it. My rash was so bad that I was on steroids plus a couple of other meds to help with the itching. DO NOT WEAR THE BINDER with the heat rash as it is only going to aggravate it and you will continue to be miserable! My surgeon was surprised to see such a reaction on me and although he likes his patients to wear them he certainly wasn't about to have me wear it with that rash. If you are concerned about straining your incision I suggest using a pillow over your belly. I also made a special point that when standing up my arms to help me get up to put less strain on my belly. I did not have any complications whatsoever by not wearing my binder, I was just extra careful and used my heavy pillow on my tummy as much as possible (all that coughing, etc.). Good luck to you! Congrats also on joining the losing side! :-)

Call your doctor. The binder has a purpose don't just discontinue wearing it. I wasn't wearing mine right and some fluid built up in my tummy. My doctor prescribed a more comfortable better binder for me to get from the medical supply store.

Hi Amanda, I am almost 6 weeks post op and I wore the binder every single day!! Like previous posters, do make sure you are wearing it, it is necessary to wear it at all times. Anyway I got a rash right under my right breast and I used Aveeno Diaper Rash Creme and it healed right up. At night is when I was sweating the most, in my sleep and I would occassionally just open it up before I actually fell asleep, but then I would close it before I was out like a light. I actually didn't really mind it because it felt like it was holding everything right where it needed to be and if I opened it, I fell like everything was going to fall out, LOL!!!! But good luch to you. Open RNY 4-9-03 down 49 pounds!!

Hi~ To solve this problem your suppose to wear a T-Shirt under it. I use the mens undershirt (sleeveless) I'am 7 weeks post-op and have never gotten a rash, the binder doesn't bother me at all. My surgeon told me to do this from day one. Try it I'am sure it will solve your problem. Good Luck.
