Question:
Would this be considered a sugar?
our nutritionist said if sugar is in the first 3 ingrediants of something it could make us dump. So I went and bought Kashi Heart to Heart Cereal. Reading closer, the first 3 indgred. are Whole Oat Flour, Oat Bran, Florida Crystals Brand Evaporated Cane Juice, Yellow Corn Meal. The cane juice one is the one I am concerned about. and reading down there is green tea extract, honey ......think I'll dump??? — CherylS. (posted on May 17, 2003)

Ruth said all that very well indeed. Let me just add these 2 things. If
you're having cereal, chances are you're thinking the fat reduced milk of
some sort is just home free. Please note the 12g of sugar in 8 oz. So, is
there a lot of sugar? Yes, lots. If you're trying to keep your intake in
the single digits per meal. And the 2nd thing: the question is not whether
it will make you dump (I hope stuff DOES, for your sake), but whether it
will fatten you up. THAT is the real question.

The Puffed Kashi is about the only one I like. But concerning ceral and
sugar I was feeling very guilty. You see, I've been buying both Chereos..
one with Strawberries and the other with Three fruits. (Like the triple
berry the best). I like them dry out of the box and have found myself
"grazing on them" like I would pre op on chips. Anyway I went to
the dietician and was honest with her. (She works with wls patients too). I
expected a "floggin to the old noggin". Instead she thought my
choice of a snack was excellent! In my case, I do drink a chocolate milk
"occassionally" but for some reason I like my ceral dry most of
the time. I think a serving of this ceral is a cup and 6 grams of sugar. (I
like to keep under 12). Anyway, I am really happy that I'm craving a
healthy snack to graze on. Yes, I do try to watch grazing, but those Triple
Berry Chereos are calling my name. lol Anyway, perhaps try them. Oh by the
way, I do worry about this snack as there is'nt much protein and I think
it's high in carbs. But if I'm going to snack on carbs, this is a good
cereal. A better choice for snacks (or grazing) would be jerky or something
high in protein.

The Cane Juice and Honey are both no-no's, so you should be careful. I
posted a short recipe a little earlier for something crunchy to snack on,
and they remind me of the Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal....but I don't know
how they'd taste in milk. Take a regular or fat free flour tortilla and
cut it into 6 or 8 wedges. Spray both sides lightly with non-stick spray
(like PAM), and bake in 350 degree oven until crisp. Sprinkle with a
mixture of fructose and cinnamon. Quite tasty! For more recipes and a
