Question:
Is it normal to have a post op weight gain and what is the average?
I fluctuate 5lbs after being 3 years post op. Is it normal for post op gain? — Kristi A. (posted on May 12, 2003)

I am not sure what is considered normal. I am almost 17 mos postop and I
usually fluctuate between 134-139. (I hit my goal of 135) It just depends
on what time of the month it is or if I have eaten anything that might make
me retain some water (jerky, peanuts, etc). I pay careful attention to the
scale (sorry! I know some people are going to disagree with that) so that I
stay within that range. If the scale is inching up I try to drink extra
water and really watch my carb/sodium intake for a couple of days. I have
found now that this surgery has been a incredible tool, but for me to keep
my weight where I want it to be I have to eat right and exercise like
anyone else (who hasn't had the surgery).

I have read and heard Dr's say that it is normal to gain back 10-30% of
your excess weight lost as a long term post-op but don't really know about
this for sure.

Yes, that 5# swing is normal. When my swing gets a litle broad, I just get
int a few more protein drinks a day til I beat it back down to the lower
end of the swing.
