Question:
Does anyone else eat Detour Bars?
I have recently discovered the Detour Bars. They are so good that I want to eat them often. They have 30 gms protein in each bar. Should I only eat 1 per day? What's everyone else doing? — Peggy D. (posted on May 6, 2003)

Peggy - I'm 7/1/2 weeks post-op and I was checking out the Detour bars at
the Vitamin Shoppe and what struck me was that while they are high sources
of protein, they have 310 calories! That seemed like a lot to me - right
now, that's 1/3rd of my daily intake and I decided
not to buy them because of that. Anyway, maybe when I can eat more, I will
splurge, but not right now.

I just went to a seminar of body building and they said that although the
Detour bars have 300 calories they are a perfect MEAL for us. Great for on
the run. Or if you do a 6 small meals a day vs 3 (I do) you can cut them in
half

I eat approximately 1/2 bar per day. I use it as a snack. I do not worry
so much about the calories, as I'm not a calorie counter. I do however
watch carbs and sugars and I have dumped on this bar if I eat too much of
it. I guess I'm more sensitive to sugar. If you check their website the
net carbs, although they're not printed on the label yet, are 10 g net
carbs. To me that seems great, almost too good to be true. I think these
bars are wonderful and they don't seem to have hindered my weight loss at
all. Hope this helps.

I love them. They taste just like a snickers. I eat a half of one once or
twice a day as a snack or a meal. I think 15g of protein for 150 cal is
good, especially considering how yucky all the other protein bars are. I
get mine at DPS, they're cheaper than buying them separately.

I love the Detour bars too but at 310 calories, I do 1/2 a bar at a time.
They are good!

I must be the odd one. I tried a Detour bar last week. Didn't love 'em.
I had cut off half to eat as a snack, and after the first few bites it had
an awful bitter after taste. The other half is still in the freezer. Any
other suggestions for protein bars??? I also tried one called CarbRite or
something like that, and the Atkins Advantage. I too, would like to find
one I like as a meal on the go.

Have you tried the caramel peanut? Not all of the Detour bars taste good,
but the caramel peanut is the best. I use it as a meal replacement bar. I
can eat the whole thing at 7.5 weeks out with no problem.

I found a new bar out called Odyssey. It is similar to a detour but only
has 3 grams of sugar. Same weight and has 30 grams of protein. I don't
think it has as much of an after taste to me anyway. I found these at GNC
stores.

I just posted about the new protein bar called Odyssey. They also only
have 290 calories.

I eat Detour Bars on the weekends (I do shakes at work during the week) and
I eat half a Detour Bar a day. I get the rest of my protein (and I get 50
- 60g a day) from food.
The only exception to this is when I'm out and about for the entire day and
can't eat normally - then I might eat a whole bar but I eat it in two
sittings - one is just too much at a time for me.

I eat one Detour a day, most days. However, I have to spread it out over
the day or I'll dump on them! The sugar content is too high for me to eat
it all in one sitting. They are delish!!!!

I found Detour bars - smaller version of the large one - at Target. They
are 40 grams (1.4 oz.), 160 calories, 15 grams of protein and 13 grams of
carbohydrates. Much easier to deal with! Maybe the manufacturer realized
that 300 calories was scaring people away!

Well, I've been thinking long and hard about posting an answer to this
question. I love the detour bars. I am also a buyer for my
company/hospital. Like I said, I love the detour bars. But, here is what
I've been told about them - they've already been sued once for fraudulent
labeling. They actually have 36 grams of sugar and only 20 grams of
protein. One of the sources that actually sells us the detour bars is the
one who gave me this information. So, if he's actually cheating himself
out of a big sale by giving me this info then it does make me wonder. It
sort of falls under that "If it sounds too good to be true it usually
is" cliche. He said the lawsuit occured in New York state and that
they've adjusted their labeling in that area although it still does not
reflect accurate nutritional info. Is this true? I don't know for sure.
I don't do detour bars anymore only because they have so many calories and
because they are technically a "food" so we don't absorb all the
protein. I have no clue how to prove any of these claims. I wish I did.
I considered calling the manufacturer and telling them my concerns and
seeing what they had to say. Maybe if I told them the call was being
recorded they'd be honest. Who knows? Maybe my information is all wrong
but it gave me some concerns. Hope you won't flame me or kill me for
passing along this info! :) The detour bars really are yummy and I
genuinely hope they're exactly what they say they are.

I am in the minority here. I don't like them. The aftertaste is just plain
nasty. I am suspicious about the claimed nutrition, too. Of course I am
a curious puss and had to try one , just to see what the noise is all
about. STill, as a general rule, I agree with the lady who said "If it
sounds too good to be true, it probably is."
