Question:
Is there anyone out there who started hiking and backpacking post-op?
I have recently become interested in hiking and backpacking (2 months post-op). When I get closer to goal, I would like to begin doing these things on a regular basis, but I am not sure of how to begin or what I will be able to eat while out on the trail. Any suggestions? I am already a fan of camping, so that won't be a problem. Are there special requirements (protein, carbs, sodium, etc..) that I need to be aware of? My main area of interest is the Smoky Mts if there is anyone who would like to talk or possible join me on some future outings! — Nicole L. (posted on May 1, 2003)

I always did backpack--very slow tho... Post op I find many of the freeze
dried foods you can get from camping store are good and high in protein.
Just learn to read the labels. I am heading for Uganada and Rwanda for a
gorilla trek later this month and my surgeon told me the most important
part of the trip for me was making sure I got enough water each day. I
will be nine months post op then, he told me if I didn't get my total 60g
of protein a day, not to worry. Also I have found those little packs of
tuna with lite mayo, relish and crackers to be a great source of protein.
Have fun

Jerky, trail mix (with nuts and raisins - skip the M&M's though unless
you can find them sugar-free :>), smoked salmon, lots of things.

Just be sure to eat a little GORP (Good Ol Raisins & Peanuts), aka
Trail mix, at a time, rather than handfuls at rest stops. Also remember to
sip, sip, sip water. There is such variety these days on freeze dried
foods that you should be able to make good choices there. Your pack will
weigh less now than Pre-Op because your clothes are smaller! Good Luck.

when you get closer to goal, you'll be able to eat more.. its seems
impossible now I'm sure. There are so many great portable things to eat
these days, I'm sure you'll do fine. There are lots of protein snacks too,
so you have a lot of choices. Good luck!
