Question:
Anyone ever had this done a 2nd time?
I had this done almost 20yrs ago when there was no support group or I was told about staple line failure. I know that it is more risky because of scar tissue, but I still would like to do it again now that I am older and wiser. — Zena P. (posted on April 28, 2003)

I had gastroplasy performed 18 years ago when I was 22. I just had it
revised on March 3, 2003 to a gastric bypass. My surgeon was able to
perform it lap, but when he got into the surgery, he found I had a
tremendous amount of scar tissue from the previous surgery. He was able to
finish the surgery still as a lap, but it took 5 1/2 hours. When he saw me
in recovery, he told me that I had more scar tissue than he had ever seen.
But, even if he had had to convert to an open procedure, the incision would
have only been about 4 to 5 inches rather than 14 like my old scar.

Zena- I also had gastroplasty in 1992. I was 18. I was not aware of
staple line disruption, but it happened. I just had the RNY revision done
on Feb. 14. It was harder to recover the second time around, but worth it.
I have lost 50 lbs so far and I am also older and wiser. Good luck on
your decision. Stephanie Teal

I had non-transected RNY in 1994. SLD in 1999, and yes, I revised 1/2000.
And if I had some other mechanical failure, I'd do it again!

Thanks for all that have answered. I am going to press to have it done
again. I had an upper GI down 2 weeks ago and it showed that the staple
line did fail. Although the surgeon I went to see didn't want to perform
it again (he advertises that he can do his surgeries in 60-90minutes) I am
betting that I won't make enough money for him to justify a more lengthier
surgery! Also, does anyone know of surgeons in the DC, MD or VA that is
experienced with second time surgeries? Thanks, Again. Zena P
