Question:
Can someone tell me what each incision is for???

I suppose this sounds nuts.. but I am 4 weeks post-op. I have had a lap RNY and have 5 incisions.. 1 in the naval, and incisions under each breast and another incison under the breast incision that are lower and a bit to the side. The incision under my left breast (I'm big breasted) is having a devil of a time to heal.. I also noticed yesterday that there seems to be a hard spot around the incision.. just wonder what was done in that area.. actually wondering what was done in each area.. is the naval incision the one used just for the camera?? I suppose this is a crazy question.. but just wondering.. as I mentioned I am particularly interested in the incision underneath my left breast. Thanks so much! Hi Cheri...hope you're doing well. As far as the incision (trocar) sites, I learned that they basically make the incisions surrounding the area where they will be working. Each surgeon varies as to where the camera is inserted. I did learn that the "largest" incision is usually that way because it is where they did the most work. The ports are basically open to fit any of the surgical instruments and can be used interchangeably during surgery. There is no "set standard" that I know of for which instrument goes in which port. I feel for you on the "breast" situation. I'm in your boat. All I did to prevent irritation was go without a bra while home and place a soft washcloth or handtowel between my breasts and stomach. The weight of my breasts kept the towel in place and prevented irritation. Also, when wearing a bra, I did the same thing. Washcloth between my skin and bra...the bra held the towel in place. Having cut myself on glass before, I know that the "hard spot" you mention is simply the skin/tissue healing. They stay hard for a little while. I'm a little over 2 weeks post-op, and I've been using Mederma to minimize scarring as the incisions heal. It seems to be working pretty great...best of luck to you!***Amy LAP RNY 04-09-03
