Question:
Can you take regular pills?

I have been reading where people take liquid medication... I have absolutely no problem taking regular medicine (pills... any size). I'm 13months out...Can anyone else take any pills without complications. I can also eat anything too with out it bothering me.    — Kay W. (posted on April 21, 2003)

It depends on the size. I take Synthroid (small pill) with no problems and can take my coumadin (small - football shape) with no problems. Ditto for my Lasix. Vitamins - I take the chewables because I don't mind the taste (Spectravite multi-vite) or actually enjoy it (Twinlab Chewable Calcium Citrate Wafers). I've taken two Tylenol Arthritis pills and could feel them sitting in my pouch for a hour or more. If I can come up with a smaller alternative for medicines that I have to take, then I do it...JR

I take most pills without too much difficulty. In the beginning, I got filled up fom them and looked for liquid alternatives, but now, all are oral pills except for the chewable vitamins---I'm using them up since I paid for them!!!! The calcium citrate pills sometimes require a 2nd swallow of water. I need the pill form since I take them at work with breakfast.

I always try to find capsules but at 3 months out I take everything in pill form with no problems.

I've been taking regular pills from pretty much month 2 (I'm 7 and 1/2 months out now). I take regular Centrum and another horse pill vitamin for my hair and nails. I have no problem with any of them, whereas I could never stand anything chewable.

Almost 8 mos out I can take any pill, I just make sure it's one at a time and I do leave 5 min between if I can. As ar as eating goes I have been very careful with the suger thing. I know people who push it. ( have abit of a candy bar now and one in an hour) I dont do that. I'm afraid I'll end up right back where I started from.

I have been taking pills since my first week. Some of them are quite large. I can also eat just about anything too. I haven't bothered with rice or noodles, since they have practically zero nutritional value. I haven't thrown up once. My weight loss is slow, but that's ok. I've lost 50lbs in 4 months.

I was told to avoid pills larger than an M&M for the first three months and not to worry about it after that. The only thing I was told to do was take it with the least amount of water possible and then have nothing by mouth for 30 minutes afterwards so it had time to dissolve and absorb.

I was taking pills from the time I got home from the hospital with no problem. However, if they are the large horse pills, they some times feel stuck so I stay away from them or cut them in half. I also take "normal" size bites of food but chew, chew, chew. No probelms there unless I'm not careful and dont chew it to mush. Sidney Open RNY 10-23-02 down 80+
