Question:
Has anyone else heard that BTC in Ypsilanti will no longer accept BCBS?

I am just wondering if anyone else has heard this about the Bariatric Center in Ypsilanti, MI. I find it so unbelievable because so many people carry this insurance. Is there anything we can do?    — Laura S. (posted on April 4, 2003)

i also know that BTC in an IN NETWORK BCBS carrier. My friend has a BCBS EPO which means she can go to any facility/dr that accepts bcbs with a referral but she has no out of network benefits. BTC was considered out of network for bcbs. As far as i know, BTC is not an any networks and for all who go there you must have out of network benefits.

That is where I had my open RNY done in Sept 2002 and BCBS covered 100% and all my post-op visits are suppose to be covered so I hope that does'nt change. I will look into that. Thanks for posting!

Does this include patients that are seen at the BTC Holland Office that are scheduled for Ypsilanti. Is this just a consultation issue or a conflict with the hospital in Ypsilanti where the surgery is performed? More information on this subject would be wonderful!

Yes, that is true. I just spoke with Anitia at the BTC in Ypsilanti and she told me that they would not be able to do my surgery since it is scheduled for May 6, 2003. Now what?

I received my letter today from BTC in Ypsilanti explaining why they will no longer accept BCBS. My surgery was scheduled for May 1. April 30 is the last day they will be doing surgery. I called and confirmed that my surgery was indeed cancelled but to hold on with getting my records because there may be a cancellation and I would be one of the first people to fill the slot. I shed a few tears and am now in the process of getting an appointment at the CORI Center in Warren. I was impressed by their website and Doctors. I asked about my files and they said they can send me everything but the psych evaluation. They legally cannot pass that on---so I emailed my Psych Doc. and asked him to send me a copy. Hope this helps and I feel awful for all of us that this is hurting. Those who have already had surgery, are still covered. Laura

The cut off date is May 5. My sister works there at BTC in ypsilanti. After May 5 no new surgery for BCBS patients but they will still do post op follow up at no charge

They are no accepting BCBS because BCBS want the hospital or the patient to pay 80% or more the surgery. BCBS will of cover up to 20% now. Since BCBS is BTC biggest provider the hospital is in trouble. My sister was told that she will not have a job there after april.

I had my surgery at the Ypsilanti office on April 11, 2003. They said that as of May 30th they were no longer able to accepty BC/BS because BC/BS would only reimburse them 26% of the cost of surgery. All other insurances reimburse at 80-90% of cost. I was told that they would go from doing 16 surgeries a day to only 16 a week. A nurse there said that 45 nurses had been fired and only had a short time left to work.

Check out Dr. Wood and Sapala! They are an awesome alternative to BTC. Dr. Sapala started BTC many moons ago with his father. They now do what's called the micropouch that doesn't stretch over time. Definately worth checking out. weightlosssurgery.com is their website.
