Question:
What do you use to prepare your protein shakes?
By this, I mean do you use a blender, hand mixer, shaker cup? If you use a blender, what speed to you mix at? What type of blender is powerful enough to crush ice? I am in real need of boosting my protein, and want to learn to prepare the shakes so that they are yummy. Any help would be much appreciated. — PJ M. (posted on April 3, 2003)

I use a blender to mix my shakes. I've never had a problem crushing ice
with any blender. Sometimes I use the "pulse" setting for the ice
and the "mix" setting for the shake.

I use a regular size black and decker brand blender that I bought at
Walmart. They are inexpensive. But nearly all blenders will work. First,
I put my water in then my powder mix. then my fruit or coolwhip or whatever
else I use and blend on high. I drop my ice cubes in one at a time thru
the hole in the top to get a thick rick consistency. Some of the powders
mix well in a shake-up type blender but most don't. Lately, I have
resorted to buying the pre-mixed ones from Walmart. I like them much
better.

I use a Braun Hand blender. But I use crushed ice (my fridge crushes ice).
I think if I had regular sized ice, I'd use a blender. I will use a
shaker if I am out of town for an extended period of time and don't feel
like packing my hand blender.

I use a 400 watt Braun blender stick. I had a smaller one that I used
until it sort of gave out. This thing is powerful, crushes ice, fruit,
etc.

I don't go to that much trouble! I use a brand of whey protein called
SciFit, chocolate ice cream flavor. It mixes with liquids easily. I just
use a spoon to stir it into skim milk. Sometimes I stick it in the freezer
so it gets slushy. Tastes like chocolate milk, no aspartame (uses stevia as
the sweetner). I took the SciFit powder in to my surgeon's dietician and
she said it was fine to use.

I use a hand (stick) blender, not an upright blender. Easier and quicker
to clean (I'm lazy)! I use Proscore 100 Chocolate with water only. I
blend it up and stick it in the freezer. At 15 minutes, it's cool and easy
to drink. At about 25 minutes, it starts to taste like a fudgesicle. :~D
Sometimes I let it freeze just a little, chop up the frozen parts, and
drink/eat it like a smoothie. Enjoy!

I actually use my food processor because it totally breaks down all of the
fruit to a total liquid and makes the shakes fluffy and yummy.I started out
just using a shaker bottle for my Real Meals and it was great until I
started wanting to add other stuff to it. I am thinking about getting one
of those smoothy machines. Has anyone tried them?

I use a cheap hand blender. I make 6+ shakes a day, so no time to clean a
big blender. I also shake some with a ilttle water & ice. With the
shaker, about 6 oz water, Stack chocolate ice (if I can get it) and I'm
done. In the hand blender, ProScore 100 choc, about 8 oz water, crushed
ice, hit with the hand blender. I used to use real ilce cubes & did
manage to crush them with the hand blenders, but um, their life span was
considerabily shortened. I buy them for cheap or at garage sales. Here's

Just happened that I had to buy a new blender last night because I wore out
my old one making my protein shakes (3 a day). The new one I bought was a
"Bar" blender 350 watts and a huge differance in performance over
the old one. Crushes ice completely and the texture is comparable to Jamba
Juice in the end. Now my 12 year old daughter is hooked. There are
inumerable recipies for shakes/smoothies but I'll share my favorite morning
shake-1 cup soy milk, 1 1/2 t instant espresso coffee, about 2 T splend(or
to taste) 1 cup crushed ice, and 1 serving Isopure vanilla protein. It will
give you 59 grams protein, 290 calories and it will start your day with
about 16 oz toward you fluid intake. Hope you enjoy all of the sugestions
and adjust to your own taste.

I use a Tupperware shaker to mix my shakes. It's the one with the small,
covered opening and the measurement markings on the side. I make mine with
skim milk and the shaker seems to do the trick. I keep one at work, and
one at home.
