Question:
For The Super MO (375 and up) Concerns about slow loss

I started out at 388 (5'6"). I have had 150cm bypassed. I had wls on 10/15/02. I have lost about 85 lbs..not really any in the last 6 weeks or so. I am doing ok on protein and h2o. Does this seems a bit slow for a heavyweight? Can Realistically expect to get to my surgeons goal of 127...dont know where he got it but it seems untouchable to me...I was thinking 180. Does that sound more realistic? Also, am I the ONLY one that is having a hell of a time controlling what I eat? Im a little depressed about having such a long road a head and the fact that I have to be on a pretty strict diet in order to lose the weight. I guess Im one of those who never get a break and will have to stay on a strict diet forever. I am in counseling about the eating disorder...just started. I also go to post-op group every week. — cherokey55 (posted on March 26, 2003)

hi, Terri - I had surgery 7/30/2001. I was SMO w/a BMI of 54. I am 5'7" and starting weight was 342 - RNY w/150cm bypass. I am now hovering @ 150 - 155 and quite frankly this is definately lower than my goal and my surgeons. I think that if I were to get to 140 or so (textbook BMI) I would look like skin and bones. I am currently wearing a size 6 or 8 pants and a small (although sometimes I will still buy a med. because the small just looks so tiny!) in tops. I think that @ 180lbs I was wearing a 12 or 14 and I would have been quite content with that! I don't know, 127lbs seems awfully low since you are only 1" shorter than I am, but one thing that I have found out is that your goal will probably change as you progress. AS far as "food demons" I think that we all still have them, counseling is a good thing to continue. I know for myself, there are days when I seem to eat all day and other days when I could care less if I ate anything! I always try to eat a high protein super low carb breakfast, still do one whey protein supplement daily (two on a little food day), and make it a priority to at least do a 2mile aerobic walk 5x/wk - it takes less than 1/2 hr out of my day and it sets up a good dynamic for the rest of the day. Good luck! There are alot of us who have been there done that and will give you support as you need it.

HI there.. we have fairly similar stats... I was 372.. I'm 5' 6" .. although I have no clue what I have bypassed.. I'd say between 100 and 150cm... I had my surgery on 6/27/02 .. and I've lost about 142 pounds.. barely.. I've been going back and forth right now on a few pounds. I believe it happens, I"m working hard at maintaining my good mood about it and not giving up.. just keep doing the right things.

What are you eating besides protein and water? It should only be fruit and veggies.. and if you must have other carbs, make sure its whole grains and beans. I also highly recommend keeping track of what you're eating-- I use www.fitday.com . You'd be surprised what you're eating.. and myabe you're not getting what you think in protein? I try to keep my protein about 45-55 % of my total calories.

Are you eating enough? You MUST eat to lose weight. This is such a hard concept, I know for me that I want to cut back when I don't lose but we must not do that. Our bodies will hold on to every single ounce if it doesn't believe its going to get enough food. If you're really being completely perfect with your eating... add 1/4 cup of nuts a couple times a week... it should jolt your system a little or add something totally new but still good for you--beans, whole grain bread.. bulgar wheat.. soemthing new and different.

Yes, you will have to control what you eat.. we all do.. even thin people they have to think about it to stay there.. and if you want that, you will to some extent have to use some control.

Finally, EXERCISE! Are you moving? If you're not exercising your chances of longterm success are not going to be so great. If you exercise, regularly, and keep increasing it as you get more fit.. yo uwill lose weight and you can relax a little what you eat.. WHEN you are ready to maintain. Its good to get the exercise habit started early.

Good luck.. I know where you are.. please email me if you like.

Your doctor is whacked. At 5'6 and 127, your BMI would be 20. Give me a break. How to lose? I think the previous posters gave some good tips. I would definitely continue with the counseling and the support post-op meetings. I know that many think that WLS is the end of 'dieting'. It isn't. Although I see a lot of posting that people have no problems, in general it has taken them a long time to get there. And... isn't it always the case that someone else loses faster? Stop beating yourself up.

Hey Terri, I started at 460+(1/17/03) and I'm 5'6. I lost 47 so far. My doc wanted me at 160, pipe dream. I will be happier than a you know what if i get under 250. My personal goal is 225. I was told that the more you weigh the heavier your bones weigh, so at 160 I could look smaller. But I met a lady who lost 240 started at 399. She lost 140 after her first year. So keep up the good work!!!

Terri, I agree that you doctor is unrealistic!!! I am 5'6 and would like to get down to 180, my doctor has put my goal at 217. I started at 382. It has taken me 11 weeks to loose 39.6 pounds which I believe is way to slow but the doctor says 3 pounds a week is what he likes to see. At 3 pounds a week, one year would be a loss of 150 pounds so I guess I am okay with that. I have always been a slow loser so I am not surprised now. I think you are doing okay so far, 85 pounds in 5 months is alot. God bless.

Hi Terri. I read your profile and see that we have a lot in common. I had RNY surgery on 10/15/02, 35 years old, and have 2 children. I am 5'3" and started out 316 with a BMI of 56. As of this morning, I have lost 87 pounds. My weight loss is more slow and steady rather than mixed with regular plateaus. I couldn't tell from your profile if you get enough water or if you exercise, but by your own admission, you don't get in enough protein. I'd say that you need to get that up to 65 oz a day, make sure you are exercising, getting in enough calories, and drinking 64 oz. minimum of water every day. Good for you for seeking counseling before letting carbs get out of hand. I think you are making wonderful progress and remember that everyone's struggle is different. While I don't really have a hard time with the food, I have to argue with myself every day to exercise and I only walk about 2 miles a day. This is far less than what I know I need to do. Anyway, my point is to shoot for the long-term life-long changes rather than major weight loss in the short term. Yes, you have a long road ahead but look at how far you've come!

That should be 65 GRAMS of protein, not OUNCES. Sorry!

ORIGINAL POSTER HERE.....Thank you for the input. I feel that my surgeons goal of 127 is unrealistic..180 sounds good to me. I do the Leslie Sansone 3 mile video Mon-Fri along with 60 tummy crunches and freeweights. I get in at least 64 oz of liquid daily. Over th past week or so I have made some diet changes. Until I get thngs well under control I now eat only protein and allow myself one bite of whatever else Im serving. I eat crackers with my cheese nd lunchmeat (one meal a day), take all my vites. I allow myself one splurge on Saturday...a bit of chocolate or ice cream whatever I want. Whenever I get a desire to cheat I will remind myself that on Sat I can have it... Its just that somedays I swear I want to eat every hour. I feel like that 2 or 3 days a week, the time, I'm fine. Thank you for your imput :)
