Question:
Has anyone been told that doing situps pre op will help to strengthen the muscles
around the stomach and help you heal faster? — justme62906 (posted on March 20, 2003)

I was watching for an answer to this, but it's about to fall off the
top-ten Q&A list, so ... I'll just pass this along, for what it's
worth. In reading the plastic surgery boards on yahoo, I've seen some
folks report that their docs believe it's easier to perform a tummy tuck if
the ab muscles *aren't* well-toned (without differentiating between tt
surgeries where they cut the abdominal muscles, and those they where they
don't -- big danged difference, I know, but I just can't recall the
context). That seemed counter-intuitive to me, so maybe someone will come
along and correct this if I read it wrong. I do know that you will want to
leave your abs alone for a good long while after an open gastric bypass
procedure, because of the danger of developing a hernia. At nine+ months
out, I still don't target that particular area for exercise (lingering
hernia fears), though it's getting more toned because of the other
exercises I do. I keep meaning to ask my doc if it's okay now to do lots
of ab crunches, etc. (Gee, I wouldn't be forgetting that question on
purpose now, would I? :~P). Anyway, I hope somebody else gives you a
better answer.
