Question:
Machines Suitable for 400-pounds+
Are there any exercise machines that are suitable and rated for use by people weighing over 400 pounds? I'm about 430 now, and about 1 month-pre-op.<p>I just inquired about the NordicTrack elliptical trainers, and their weight limit for all machines is 260 pounds, which seems rather low. The treadmill I have now is a good one, but I think the limit is 350, and after a few minutes use I can smell a little smoke from the motor, so I've discontinued using it (for a few more months anyway.) Right now I'm walking about 1.5 miles a day in the parking garage at work, but I'd really like something I could do in the privacy of my own home. Suggestions? — Jim F (posted on March 19, 2003)

Jim, have you tried swimming? Water aerobics is wonderful because it
doesn't hurt the joints and you can weigh anything. Don't worry about what
you look like. I've discovered NO ONE looks good in a bathing suit! LOL.
Just join the local Y or community pool and swim for YOU. Best of luck.

My recommendation is that you don't go out and spend a lot of money on a
machine that can hold you now. I know you're excited to get started
losing, but, after you have WLS you will lose so fast that you'll be small
enough to use the regular stuff in a few months! I started at 465, within
4 months I'd already lost 100 lbs without exercising (don't tell my surgeon
that).

Thanks for the replies and the leads folks! I understand that swimming is a
good solution, but this is not something I can see myself doing for another
couple of years, and after a couple of plastic surgeries :(

JIM,
My favorite exercise to do in the privacy of my own home is to dance! I
put on some music (or even MTV)and dance like I did in my early years. It
doesn't take much, as long as your moving. I also have free weights,
dynobands (like big rubber bands) and exercise ball, yoga tapes, tae bo,
etc... So I have a variety to choose from so I won't get bored. Best of
luck to you..keep on truck'n! Aims

Jim,
I would say if you have the money, there are treadmills out there that are
rated for higher weights. I'm also over 400#, and I invested in a Landice.
It wasn't cheap ($2300), but it was worth every penny. Check out their
website, www.landice.com
