Question:
Gas...is whey the culprit?
Okay, this is embarrassing, but I have gas so bad lately I can't even stand myself. Luckily we have a dog and I can blame most of it on her. The only thing that I am doing different lately is eating Detour bars. Anyone experience gas from whey? I'm still pre-op, so I can't blame it on surgery. — Martha K. (posted on March 18, 2003)

I had to change my son's formula because I had him on a whey-based formula
and it caused terrible stomach distress for him, including gas. (I never
could tolerate the taste of whey protein, opting for egg protein, instead)
Hope this helps.

If they contain sugar alcohols, it probably is the Detour bars. Sugar
alcohols cause gas and sometimes diarrhea in lots of people. Including me!
I can eat less "sugar-free" stuff than I can the real thing
because I do occassionally have to venture out of the house . . .

I was having terrible gas with my protein drinks with whey for a while. I
tried taking lactaid with them & it helps loads. They didn't used to do
this so I don't know if the whey is the actual problem. The sugar alcohols
in some foods is a painful thing for me. Malitol has to be very limited for
me.

The Detour bars bother me as well, really bad gas pain! But it's not the
whey in them that does it for me, it's the peanuts. I can eat other protein
bars fine but not with peanuts. Bummer too, those Detour bars taste mighty
good! - Anna LAP RNY 7/3/02 -120lbs.
