Question:
Does anyone make their own protein bars??

I read that someone had posted a protein bar recipe on the mes. board....I couldnt find it. Can we make our own without losing the proteins integrity (if cooked/baked)? I have yet to find a bar or shake I can tolerate (yuck). My hair is falling out like crazy STILL and I have low protein levels and my surgeon is telling me I must double my protein intake. Im willing to try anything...I gag on the shakes and the bars are almost as bad. Im not looking to make a recipe book to sell. This would be for my own use only. I had the same trouble with all protein supplements. The bars YUCK the shakes make me vomit! I found a bar called Balance Nutrition that is relatively small but still has 19g of protein per bar. And they are very good. If you are a dumper you may have trouble with them because they do have sugar in them, however they are exact 40 30 30 nutrition which has helped me a lot. My protein level at my last blood test was like 2.0 and now it is going up. My favorite is the chocolate peanut butter, it is very tolerable because I do not like the chocolate chunk or anything like that. All those fancy flavors make me sick. The chocolate banana is pretty good too. I think you can get them just about everywhere but I know Target carries boxes of them and most grocery stores have them as individual bars. Good luck, take care of yourself.

Personaly I never could figure out why people seem to think they have to devour those shitty drinks and bars. I ate mostly meat and cheeses, and my blood protien level was 8 point something! My regular doc took one look at the test and said "Come off the protein shakes IMMEDIATELY!" But I was'nt on any. ;) When I went for my six month check up with my surgeon I told him. HE WAS VERY PLEASED. I just ate meat first at meals (mostly meat actually). Then for snacks I ate things like deli sliced ham (for one example) and cheese. Oh I also ate alot of Beef Jerky. These are all foods I love. They tasted very good, were filling and upped my protein. Forget those shitty shakes and bars. The bars may be good to keep in your purse or car for an emergency (although I prefer Jerky) but they are a waste of money. Alot of them are full of sugar and carbs anyway. EAT YOUR PROTEIN with good healthy meat and cheese. :)

I make a drink that I like. I put about 1 cup no fat milk, a whole package of very very fine tofu, a large handful of frozen fruit and 5 packages of sweetner in the blender and mix under completly chopped. This make three proteen drinks and I like the taste. I also sometimes add some of the yucky tasting protein drinks that I purchased to the blender mix because it adds more protein and it doesn't affect the taste. Good luck.

Terri, do a search for a website called Low Carb Cafe. Go to the cookbook section. type in"bars" in the search box. It will bring up a lot of low carb and relatively high protein bar recipes. Most of them have All Bran in them and protein powder among other ingredients. I am sure you can find a recipe and modify it to suite your taste. I used to have a recipe I used several times, but I can't find it now, but most of the recipes on this site are pretty similiar. Most involve no cooking or baking, so the protein probably stays intact. I think I will make some bars for myself - sometimes you want something quick that you can grab on the way out the door, or to keep the "hungries" at bay when you can't eat a meal. There are also a lot of protein drink ideas there also. I used this site a lot when I was trying to lose weight on a low carb diet ( and I did lose 35 lbs.).

THANK YOU to everyone for the information. DANIEL I agree with you that they are too expensive and taste shitty. Im just having trouble EATING that much protein....but maybe if I did then I would be able to cut out more carbs...What did you eat at 5 months out on an average day and how many protein grams did you get in???
