If my 2nd appeal doesn't get approved I will be a self-pay. My insurance will not cover any complications. Has anyone purchased supplemental insurance that WOULD cover complications? — Nancy B. (posted on March 4, 2003)

I don't have an answer but you are wise to think this way. One of the
ladies from our support group was a self-pay and you would have assumed she
would have zero problems as she had no co-morbs and only a 40 BMI and 32
yrs old, healthy etc. Her surgery went fine except she ended up back in
the hospital 3 days after she was released and had a bleed that they had to
go in and fix and spent another 4 days in the hospital. I don't know if
her insurance will cover or not as it certainly was life threatening but it
was a direct result of the WLS. If she has to pay then her cost is
probably twice the original $29,000.
