Question:
Lap RNY - are there drains, what clothes do you wear?
I was wondering if you have drains with the Lap RNY. I don't have a robe or nightgown (just shorts and a t-shirt) and I am trying to figure out what I can/should wear in the hospital. — Kendra S. (posted on February 24, 2003)

You'll wear a hospital gown in the hospital. If you don't have a robe, you
can just wear a second hospital gown with the ties in the fron to use like
a robe. Try to take your own slippers if you can and ones that you don't
have to bend over to put on. The hospitals usually provide socks with a
non-skid bottom, but you may have trouble putting those on yourself. To
get to and from the hospital, wear something loose-fitting, like a loose
dress or sweats or something that does not bind you.

I had a drain for 6 days, and it didn't hurt. It was difficult to take a
shower, but I just did the best I could. I didn't wear pajamas, I wore
loose drawstring waist pants and a t-shirt when I couldn't stand the
hospital gown anymore. I'd think shorts and a t-shirt would be excellent!
Oh yeah, some people don't have ANY drains, it depends on your surgeon.

I just wore the hospital gown the whole time. I was allowed to bring a robe
and slippers, but never really used the robe, just the slippers to walk
around in. And I wasn't supposed to bring clothes besides that anyway. B/c
of the drain and bandages, etc. you will probably ruin your
clothes.<p> I also had the drain in for less than 48 hours, I didn't
have to go home with it in. The drain didn't hurt that much to take out
either, but it was the weirdest feeling ever though! Goodluck to you.

Kendra, I have to tell you my LAP was so easy! I had no drains, no
morphine pump, nothing but shots if I needed them for pain. I really
didn't need them, it was the gas they pump in you that is a pain. Don't
worry about a robe, they will give you one of their designer robes to put
on...lol. You don't need anything really except a postive attitude and you
will do wonderful! I just wore what they gave me until it was time to go
home. So don't worry about it. Best of luck, and a healthy recovery!

I guess it depends on your doctor...I had lap RNY 10/21/02, and no drains.
Good luck!

I had a drain in for 11 days after surgery. It was more of a pain than
anything and all I did was pin it to my clothes. When I took a shower I got
a long shoestring type thing, put it around my neck and tied it through the
drain tab, worked great. As far as what to bring to the hospital, I packed
a whole bag and didn't touch it. All I used were my slippers. I kept on the
hospital gown and used a second one backwards as a robe. I think they like
you to wear theirs anyway so it's easier for the nurses to get at you when
they need to do things.

I had a drain for 10 days after surgery. Leaving the hospital and going to
the store with it was a pain. I wore an oversized sweatshirt and had it
pinned to the inside. The worst part was trying to shower with the thing.
In the hospital I only had a robe draped over my shoulders because of the
IVs. You could use 2 hospital gowns instead. I brought slippers but
never wore them, I used the slipper sox given in the hospital. going home
I wore very roomy sweat pants, tee shirt and oversized sweatshirt.

I had a lap RNY in October and did not have any drains. I would still
suggest wearing hospital gowns (and PJ bottoms or shorts if you wish.) If
you have an IV, the gowns are much easier to get in and out of. If you
accidently get drainage on them, it's no problem. Save your own clothes
for wearing when you get home. I took a robe, and I actually got one a
size larger, which worked out great. Take your own slippers with non-skid
soles so you can get moving! Take some nice comfy clothes to wear home -
elastic waist, easy to put on.

I agree with a previous post. It all depends on your doctor. I had lap
RNY this last July and never had any drain tubes. I did however have an NG
tube (a tube down my nose) which was there I believe to serve the same
purpose as the drainage tube. But it was only in for one day. As far as
the robe goes, I wouldn't bother. I took mine and never used it. I just
used hospital gowns just like a previous post said (one with ties in back
and one with ties in front). I hope that helps. Good luck!

I had lap RNY 10/9/02 and did not have a drain tube. I had a NG tube (a
tube down my nose) for a day. I would not bother with the robe either. I
took mine and never used it.

I had the drain for 7 days. The only real problem is that you feel like an
alien with something growing out of your chest for a bit. It reached down
to my waste line, so I just tucked it into the elastic on my underwear or
shorts. It's gone before you know it.

One of my draind came out after 24 hours, then the other, the next day. I
just wore the hospital gowns until they were out, then cotton night shirts
after the IV was out of my arm. The hospital gowns are really more than
fine, especially if they have the ones made for MO people. Do bring your
own slippers.
