Question:
What can I eat while camping?
I enjoy camping with my friends during the summer months, but I am unsure what I will be able to eat this summer. My surgery is in 5 days and I will be going camping in North Carolina for 8 days in July. Any advice on what to expect? Should I pack protein shake mixes just in case? Thanks for the help. — Nicole L. (posted on February 22, 2003)

Nicole~ Congratulations!! 5 days - How exciting!! I love to camp too and
have thought about this too. I'm 6 weeks post-op myself and am having a
great time experimenting with new foods I can tolerate. By July, you
should be able to tolerate a wide variety of items, but you'll know your
tummy better than anyone else & everyone is different. One thing I
always loved when we camped is whole potatoes that we wrap in foil and just
throw right on the coals! This would be an ideal soft food to eat - you
can just cut them in chunks and eat the soft potatoes right off the
peelings! Definitely take your protein shakes & protein bars, they'll
be great for energy and stamina while camping. The soups in the little
starfoam cups would be really easy too...just pour hot water on them and
enjoy! Crackers & cheese would travel easily, perhaps getting some of
those cheese items from Cracker Barrel that need no refrigeration (like the
ones you get in the holiday gift packs). This makes me want to go camping
now!! Will be so glad when the warm weather arrives! Just think how great
you're going to feel (& look) when July rolls around! Let us know how
your surgery goes. Congratulations again!

By then you will be about 4-5 months out when you start enjoying your
camping. Have turkey or chicken hot dogs instead of the beef or even
turkey burgers! Those are some healthy, not too high in calories foods!

I can think of no better place to eat beans than camping! I say beans.
You'll be sitting outside anyway right. :) Those little tuna pouches
would work good camping. You might be able to eat meats by July..maybe
not...if so, I'd be eating eggs and maybe a lower fat sausage patty.
Crackers and peanut butter might work for you...I can't really do peanut
butter. You could put a fish fillet,a touch of olive oil, lemon juice,
salt and pepper in a tin foil pouch and put it on the side of a camp fire
for 30 min. or so. That would be great with salmon. Have fun in the
great outdoors!

Don't forget to take Beef Jerky, if you like it!

You should ALWAYS take your protein & vites & fresh water. Then,
eat whatever anyone else eats, MINUS the smores, of course. Skip the milk
& sugar, as usual. But eat the food in your small portions. You
didn't say if everything will be on your back or motor home, or exactly
what level of primitive camping, but somwehre in there, you'll probably
need a normal amount of non-sugar carbs to keep going.

Hopefully, by then you will have found some protein supplements/bars that
you like and can take them. Most of the other suggestions I saw looked
good, too, but I tell you what I find when I go on vacation ANYWHERE --
it's the lack of something sweet if it want it. Everyone is stopping at
the ice cream stand or eating cake and cookies and I have nothing to enjoy
along with them. Therefore, I ALWAYS make my own, put them in an airtight
container/ziploc bag and take them with me -- that way I don't feel
deprived. I just made a batch of soft oatmeal raisin cookies and they are
the BEST cookies that you'll have anywhere! Honest! If you are
interested, visit my profile page or go to
www.freewebs.com/recipes-after-rny for sample recipes, pictures and
ordering information for a recipe book that's a life saver if you've had
RNY. Good luck to you on the camping trip! I think I'll have to plan one
for this summer!
