Question:
Causes of dizziness and edema post op?

Recently I feel dizzy when I get up from the sofa, chair, floor..etc..My hands seem to be a little swollen as well. Any ideas as to what is going on?? I was thinking of trying one of those water pills.    — Michelle H. (posted on February 17, 2003)

the dizziness can be from dehydration. We all seem to go through that hypotensive stage at some point. I would be a little more concerned about the edema. IT can be caused by low protein. Either way, it i a really good idea totalk to your doc about it and get some blood work done.

I get dizzy if I haven't had enough liquid. Are you taking your Calcium CITRATE? Multi? Protein?

I've had edema since 1993 after a botched surgery. I'm 21 months post op (WLS) and still have bad water retention problems. I have to take directs, and it is'nt preventing my lightheadedness since wls. So I don't think that is the answer for you for that problem. My blood pressure is really low now (88/40 or so) and seems it drops fast when I rise up quick. That may be your problem too.

You need water, potassium, sodium. Sodium holds water and potassium releases it. The body needs a balance of both. Water releases fluid in the tissues, eliminating edema. Sodium will keep your BP from dropping fast when your getting up. I would drink as much as you can, ideally 64oz per day. Then follow with a 1/4 tsp of sodium (salt)and 1/4 tsp of potassium salt. You can buy it in the salt area. I use the Morton's No salt, which is 650mg of potassium only ingredient. I would do it 2x a day. I follow the salts with just a sip or two of juice to get rid of the taste. You don't want to flush them through with water, you want them to be in your system as long as possible.

all of these folks mean well, but they do not have a degree in medicine!!! it is clearly time for you to see your doctor!!! it could be something simple but dizziness and edema should not be treated from a message board.

It's one thing to give your OWN opinion here, like "I suggest you see your doctor" but to discredit others, not knowing their education, backround and experience is very disrespectful.
