Question:
might make pre-op blush, question about affexor
This question makes me blush as I type it. Hope to get some responses though. Is there anyone that takes affexor that has had a decrease in their libido or is unable to climax? If you want to email me directly my email is [email protected]. Thanks! — TheresaC (posted on February 12, 2003)

That happens A LOT with anti-depressant/anxiety meds. I would talk to your
doctor about it and they might be able to give you something else.

Anti depressants & sex . . . or lack thereof. I don't know about
affexor, but I've been on Paxil for a few years now, and this old body has
absolutely no interest in sex anymore.

Had the problem same with Prozac, but after a while my body adjusted to it
and things are somewhat normal. But it was a very long and *frustrating*
adjustment.

Most all antidepressants suppress libido. I've been on Paxil, wellbutrin,
and now effexor. The least suppressive was wellbutrin for me but it sucked
as an antidepressant in my case. I'm also VERY irritable when I'm
depressed, it was like, " Honey, you are irritating me to death, just
leave me alone, but hey...before you do, come over here and take off your
clothes." LOL. Things are coming around with effexor, it just takes
longer and is not as intense.

I have been on Welbutrin for about 18 months. I had an extreme boost in my
libido when I started this medication. I can tell when I don't take it,
that I am not as interested in sex. By not taking it, I mean if I forget a
couple days. But, I have noticed that after surgery, I am not as
interested as before. I am 2 weeks post-op and still taking the Welbutrin.
I hope this changes back to how it was. I don't know about Effexor, but I
do know some Psych docs won't give Prozac to women because of the decreased
libido.

I don't know if you want the male perspective, but I have been on serzone,
effexor, wellbutrin, ritalin and several other medicines for depression...
wellbutrin is the only one that has had no detrimental effect in this area.
Plus, when I switched off of effexor and serzone to other medicines I had
nasty side effects (not sex related).

I have the same problem with Zoloft and it is frustrating!! which then
makes "getting there" even harder!! My hubby has been very sweet
about hanging in there...so too speak! lol. We did try the Niagara drink
and it did increase the senses. You may want to try it...it's about $9.00 a
bottle.

Thanks for all the responses. I was on prozac many years ago. Great drug,
but libido. lol I have been on zoloft, wellbutrin, celexa and affexor.
Just started affexor. It is the best thing since prozac for me. I really
dont know about the sexual side of it YET. I was just curious. wellbutrin
did nothing for me PERIOD. I think I will stick with affexor till atleast a
few months after surgery. I have mild depression. I take meds more for ocd,
panic attacks and migranes. Anyway, thanks for the great responses. Makes a
person think. :)

I also took Zoloft, it didnt seem to help for what I needed it for. I did
not like how it lowered my sex drive.
I am now on Effexor XR and I
love it! It has really helped my problem and it in no way affects my sex
drive.
Good Luck to you! Mary

My DH was taking this a few months ago and was totally unable to climax at
all. He went off it and all has been fine since. The DR. said it
"depresses" your nervous system and blocks climax for some
people. They are working on a coated version of it that dissolves in your
small intestine instead of stomach, which alleviates the problem
completely, but it is not quite ready yet I believe.. :) Hope this helps!
