Question:
What cause metallic taste in my mouth?

I have this metallic taste in my mouth, it doesn't bother me that much. I was wondering if anyone has had this and what causes it.    — Kirk2002 (posted on February 11, 2003)

Hi Kirk, in response to your question. By any chance could your gums be bleeding? Following the birth of all of my girls. I always had a problem with my gums bleeding due to lack of some vitamin or calcium??? Any how it did leave a metallic taste in my mouth. Just a thought. HOpe it helps.

When we consume a diet of mainly protein and/or drop weight rapidly, our bodies go into ketosis. The metallic taste is one of the signs of ketosis. Many people find it unpleasant. Luckily, sugar free mints or gum control it nicely.

I had this problem also. I don't remember how far out from my surgery date I was. But I remember it lasting for a few weeks, maybe even a month. As far as the SF mints and gum go, they made the taste worse for me. It seemed to be worse when I ate anything sweet. Even though it was all SF sweeteners. It was aweful. I think the previous posts are right though, I believe it was ketosis that caused it. The nice thing is, it does go away. The problem is dealing with it, until it does. Good luck!

I believe that I have heard Michelle Curran mention that this was a symptom when she had an ulcer. Michelle??? Shelley

My nutritionist asked me if I was experiencing this at my four week checkup, and I was, it is very ordinary I guess. She suggested that I drink eight ounces of grape juice a day for two weeks. It worked for me.

How far postie are you? How does water taste? Is the taste strong? Weak? Does food or water override it? Any pain, in belly or back, for example? Nausea or vomiting? If all those answers are pretty much unremarkable, I'd call it ketosis OR the side effect of some meds you're taking? Of course, you're already reporting it to the docs. But you'll already have the answers to those questions noted, right?

For almost 4 months I could not stand the taste of any water except Evian. Then, all of a sudden, the taste went away. My doctor said it's a normal side effect and would go away. It finally did. Janelle 09/17/02 275/192/165
