Question:
i feel light headed

im 4 1/2 months post op down 90lbs, almost everytime i get up to a standing position i feel light headed,i try 2 get in at least a protien drink or 2 a day and i eat at least 1 meal, but my calorie intake is very low, im really not hungry most of the time i wonder is the light headness is caused by the fact my blood sugar gets to low. — JOAN D. Yes, having low blood sugar can dizzy feelings. Also having low blood pressure can cause this.

Joan, Are you on blood pressure meds; they may need to be adjusted. Low blood sugar could make you kind of dizzy, but I've had numbers in the 50's with no visible effects. Ask you PCP about your problem.

I too have this happen to me. Especially if i go from a crouching position and stand up real quick. I asked my surgeon about this and he kinda laughed and said welcome to being thin.... ??? He said that when we sit or crouch down it's restricting the blood flow, and when we stand up, the blood shoots up so quickly it can cause a little dizziness. I'm not sure if he's correct. But I do know that I have always had low blood pressure, and when i was severley obese these things would not happen. I went for my tests recently and everything came back fine... I dunno!! Good luck to you! 7mos post op at arround 160lbs, -102 lbs

I had this exact same problem last summer. I went to the doctor who did lab work and found out I was anemic. I am not taking iron tablets and the dizziness and anemia resolved. Please see your doctor your body is telling you something.

Me too! I never had this problem until after WLS. I've complained over and over to my doctors and no one knows. But my blood pressure has gone down to 88/40 or so. Evidently it goes lower when I get up from lying or sitting. So far I have'nt passed out... so far. It does pay to remember NOT to get up fast and to have something to hang on to. I do have problems with B-12 and am anemic too. Seems this is all to common after WLS, but it won't help us if we get hurt from falling.

I've been this way my whole life. It's gotten worse since surgery 5 months ago. I've had testing done my whole life & I'm not anemic or anything that they can find. I don't take BP meds & I have normal everything according to the tests. I've had throughout my life, lots of incidents when I pass out. Maybe one or two a year. I haven't found that eating or not eating has anything to do w/it in my case. & yeah, I take my vitamins, iron included! Good luck with this & I hope you find the solution for you!

I get that way as well (at 7 months post-op). Once, I fainted (hadn't eaten in about 7 hours), but other than that, it's light-headedness/things going dim for a second or two.
Not sure whether it's a combination of low blood sugar (twice my non-fasting blood glucose done with my regular blood tests was 75) and low blood pressure (my blood pressure was normal when I weighed 427) or one or the other individually...
Just know to get up slowly now as well as not go 7 hours between meals *G*...JR (open RNY 07/17 -152 pounds)

Great weight loss. Congratulations. Just wanted to add my 2 cents worth here. I suffered from light headedness post surgery. It was due to dehydration. How is your water consumption going? I had a stricture that caused me to spit up most of the water I swallowed. Once I had that taken care of, I was able to drink sufficient water to keep my blood pressure normal and the light headedness and fainting stopped.

Have had this happen as well,... two things that were contibuting to mine was that I was low on potassium and I was dehydrated. Didn't feel like I was dehydrated at all, but I was and I was drinking my 64 ozs of water a day!!! The potassium/water is linked. Had to add in more water and 1/4 teaspon of moron's lite salt (high potassium) for about 1 month and I have been fine. I got to lose the salt but had to keep the water level high. Surgeon and PCP stated that the water goes through just as quickly as anything else and might just need more to be absorbed. Hope this helps! Kelly RNY 3/1/02 326 to 179!
