Question:
How long before your pouch is healed?
I had lap rny on 2/28, so I'm not quite 2 weeks out yet. I am still in the liquid phase. I had a very easy surgery with no complications and have healed very nicely. The only problem I seem to be having is that it still hurts (or is unconfortable) when I drink. Every time I take a sip of water and it hits my pouch, it kind of hurts. Even when I'm not drinking, I'm always aware of a discomfort in my tummy area. I realize my stomach just went through major surgery, but how long does it take until it doesn't hurt anymore? The weird thing is, water hurts more than anything else. If I drink a protein drink or broth, it's not quite as bad. Is this normal? — Kathy S. (posted on February 8, 2003)

I'm not sure of the exact scientific words, but it has something to do with
the PH level of the water. You know how it feels to get regular water in
your eyes? That sort of "stinging/dry" feeling? It's the same
thing with the new pouch. I had that feeling as well, and it miraculously
went away around month 2 post-op. So, don't worry, it does go away. In
the meantime, take little sips, and keep at it as it's important not to get
dehydrated, and water is really the best for us. Hang in there...it does
get better! Hugs, Joy

Hi, I am about 5 weeks out and in the begining, water was the toughest
thing. But it depended if it was real cold or room temp. Cold water really
hurt my tummy but warm or room temp water was fine. Maybe you could try
that. Good luck to you!!

Hi Kathy, I am almost a month out now and for me, drinking water also
"hurt" until about 3 weeks out. All of a sudden, I noticed that
I could drink water faster and the pain was suddenly gone! You're almost
there, just hang in there and drink tap water as opposed to cold water. It
helps! Good luck to you.

Kathy,
I had some problems with water also. My surgeon told me to try the Crystal
Light drinks or Diet Snapple, anything to get in the fluids. That helped
some but now I find that I have absolutely no problem with water be it
cold, or room temperature. I was never a water drinker before but now I
seem to prefer it to anything else. I think some of us just have to have a
bit of time to adjust. Try a little flavoring in your water and maybe that
will help in the interim. Blessed be.
