Question:
Straight forward questions about Bowel Movements
Okay, I don't know how else to put this so here goes. I hope I don't offend anyone. 9 months post op. My stomach is much smaller and I eat so much less but when I move my bowels, it's sooooo much more then before. I don't understand why. I eat less and crap more. Any particular reason for this or is it must me? — Peggy D. (posted on February 3, 2003)

I'm intrested in the answers too. Perhaps it's because we absorb so much
less than we used to? I've heard a saying about WLS patients that I
thought was so true, and to the point....... "I eat like a bird and
sh*t like a bear!"

Hi Peggy,
It's quite simple really. The reason your "output" (bowel
movements) are greater than your input is because your body is getting rid
of a lot of waste that is a byproduct of weight loss. That weight your
losing doesn't just magically disappear. It has to go somewhere, and mainly
it goes down the toilet. (LOL) But really, your body is producing waste
from the energy it derives from the fat you are burning during weight loss.
That is one of the reasons it is so critical to get plenty of fluids. It
helps eliminate these wastes from your body.

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth. Better than being constipated like
me. Once something enters my body it doesn't want to leave, food or water.
I am a slow loser as a result.

How funny, I was just searching the database on this subject yesterday. I
feel the same way and would love to see some answers. ** Kelly

I wonder if part of the reason is less frequent bowel movements?? If
you're not going every day, it's going to build up inside. . .

I have experienced the same phenomenon myself. I have a question I'd like
some feedback on, kind of the same topic. I have had issues of constipation
since early pre-op. I have added some fiber to my diet (fresh fruit,
Grapenuts etc.) and it has helped a lot. However I still notice that I have
to strain to get things moving through. I'm producing plenty of it, but
it's like it gets hung up in there sideways (SO VERY SORRY for the graphics
with that). I am using some cortisone cream I got from my PCP for a
fissure. Does anyone have any experience/advice with this issue? Other than
the obvious, as I know I should be talking to my surgeon about this. I
guess I'm concerned about how you know you're getting a blockage. I can go
everyday, often 2x a day. But it requires some effort. I drink plenty of
water. Thanks - Anna LAP RNY 7/3/02 -110lbs.
