Question:
I have a questions for post-ops. What was the one or two things that you dreamed

about being able to do before surgery that you couldn't, and now do without even thinking about it? What has been the best feeling you have gotten from surgery?    — Kylie E. (posted on February 3, 2003)

Oh my goodness....there are so many! How about just going to a store and picking something beautiful out? Or going to a high school basketball game and not being afraid of the bleachers? There are so many....getting all my housework done in one day...and not killing myself to do that either! I could probably bore you with hundreds, but mostly, I think, I dreamt about dancing with my husband in public and him getting jealous cos other guys were looking at me....this just happened at a wedding in December, and it felt even better than I ever dreamed it could. If you look at my profile, you will see the dress I wore. I was at 160 or so there.

Going out in public with my body builder husband without feeling embarrassed, crossing my legs while wearing a dress, and shopping in a normal sized clothing store- all of which i can do now!

WALKING!!! I couldn't even walk into work without sucking air and being in so much pain. Now I went shopping the other day with my wife for the first in years. I walked for over three hours. I was sore from not using those muscles in the last few years but it felt great just knowing I did it.

I had always wanted to sit 'hugging' my knees with my arms. I had also dreamed of riding in an airplane and not be in pain. I have had so many 'bests' from surgery they are difficult to describe. I think my daily best is to just wake up and be able to face the day without carrying another whole self around.

Being able to take a comfortable bath in a regular bathtub. Oh, and shopping for clothes at regular stores. Very good things, indeed!

At first all I wanted was to fit in with the crowd not stick out and be the butt of tasteless jokes. Now I blend now and I never give that a second thought. The best feeling I have gotten is a life again, and I enjoy being out in it every day.

I just wanted to look, and maybe get an inkling of what it felt like, to be "normal" sized. The best feeling for me is knowing that I can dress in regular clothes and the knowledge that men find me attractive.

Not being the largest person in the room. To be "normal" sized and shop in the normal sized stores. What a thrill it is!! Now the normal sized store clothes are too big for me too!!! Now THAT'S a REAL kick!!!

Where to begin. Tie my shoes with the bow in the middle, sit in a normal movie theater seat, sit at a resturant booth without my stomach touching the table, look down and see my feet, cross my legs, walk and carry on a conversation at the same time, shop for normal size clothes (and get the great bargins), get in and out of the bathtub with ease, being able to lean over and let the water out of the tub. Work the concessions stand at my sons sporting event for 4 1/2 straight hours and not be tired. I could go on and on but you get the picture. It's the little things that we take for granted until they become struggle to do them. It's like a re-birth when your able to do these things all over again.

Breaking into a run when I need to get from here to there quickly. My body feels so natural now when I break into a jog! Also just feeling like I want to be active and DO things. I walk 4 miles round trip on Saturdays to eat breakfast. I could be there in 5 minutes with the car but I prefer to walk. I am going skiing for the first time this week. Before I would have looked for somewhere with a good lodge because I would have been sitting in front of the fire with a good book. Now I have ski pants and boots and I plan to spend most of my time out there playing! LOL

I just wanted to be able to sleep without my CPAP machine, which is now collecting dust in the closet. I also wanted to be able to cross my legs when I sit down. I know these things aren't very lofty goals but they were impossible when I started out.

I'm a fairly recent postop so I haven't gotten my little joys just yet, but I'm getting there. I have a few things that I consider goals - ride a rollercoaster and actually fit on the seat, take a bath and actually have the water cover me, walk into the Gap or Old Navy and buy a pair of jeans, cross my legs like a lady.......

Gees....so many to choose from, but one really does stand out in my mind. I HATED needing a seat belt extender on airplanes. Even though I learned to non-chalantly ask a flight attendant for one as soon as I boarded, I was always mortified. In December, 12 months and 100 pounds less, I flew to Hawaii, and it involved 5 different flights. Each and every single time, I made a big production of how I could buckle that seat belt easily, and even needed to pull the strap tighter. LOL! My daughters thought I was nuts, but I have to say that of all the wonderful things I can do now, that one meant the most to me.
