Question:
Post op weight loss
Hi Everyone: I am just curious to see if any of you have had the same pattern of weight loss. I am 5 months post op and have lost 62-63 pounds. I lost 25 pounds the first month. Thereafter, I have stayed the same for one week, and lost 1 or 2 pounds per week almost every other week. One week, I lost five pounds, but have never experienced such a huge weight loss again. Has anyone, after the initial month of losing, ever lost 1 or 2 pounds consistently? That seems to be my pattern. I am very content with this, as slow but steady is working extremely well for me. Just curious if anyone else has experienced this. Thanks for your support guys. Love Grace — Grace H. (posted on January 24, 2003)

Hi Grace,
I have had the very same results so far. I'm 6mos out and -72lbs. At 5 mos,
I was also around -63lbs. I have had several weeks with no losses and then
lose 1 or 2 pounds at a time. My 5th month, I only lost 7 lbs for the month
so I was really depressed. This month I've lost 4 so far with 3 weeks to
go...but who knows. Our bodies seem to do what they want to. I get
frustrated at the slowness that it seems like, but then again, we are
losing really fast compared to any other diet that I've been on. It will
come off!

I have experienced the same thing!!! I am 4 months and 9 days post-op and
have lost 76 lbs... the loss seems to be about 1-3 lbs per week. I am not
complaining though...cause this is the first time in my life that I ahve
lost weight consistently... and not done the lose-gain-lose-gain
game!!!!!!!
Keep up the good work!!!!

I'm glad you asked this - now I feel more normal. I am 3 1/2 months post
RNY. The first month I lost 34, second month 16, third month 10, and
continue to lose about 1-3 pounds per week also. I don't like what feels
like a slow rate of loss, but I have looked back on past diet journals and
see that I would normally only lose about 6-8 pounds per month and had a
much harder time of it.

Hi Grace- you seem to be just where I am at. I lost 30lbs. the first month
and then approx. 10 pounds each month after that. So at 8 months now, I
have lost 100lbs. I know there are many people ho have lost 30 lbs each
month. Are you considered a "lightweight"? I only had about 115
lbs to lose, so I am going to lose it slower than someone who has 200 lbs
to lose. I'm very happy with my loss though, despite the many plateaus I've
encountered as well! It will come off eventually, so don't worry, it's just
a little slower. COngrats on a great weight loss!

Hi Grace, I noticed that you started at a very low weight to begin with.
If you have less to lose, then you will lose at a slower rate. I weighed
243 at the time of surgery and a year later I am at 115. I lost at a
different rate than my heavier friends, but ultimately reached goal alot
faster. Your body will lose at the rate it can handle. You don't want to
end up underweight, because that is just as unhealthy as being overweight.

Ditto here too. I started the Atkins program last week though and have
kept eating a few extra carbs because that's what my meal plans were for
the week but have lost 5 pounds in a week. I'm 4-1/2 months out Lap RNY
and down 68 or so pounds. I'm not confident that the Atkins will help me
lose 5 pounds every week but I needed something to jumpstart the weight
loss again. Great luck!
