Question:
When they submit the BMI for insurance do they round up or down or what?
When the BMI is submitted to insurance do most doctor offices round the BMI number up or down or do they leave it with the decimal? Like if it was 39.7 is this how it will be sent or will it be 39 or 40? Sorry if this is a dumb question. Thanks — Jan S. (posted on January 22, 2003)

I do not know how your doctor will do the BMI. But, when my PCP submitted
the request he put my actual BMI which is 48.7, I was playing around with
the BMI chart and it never landed on a even number, so I hope this helps

Not a dumb question! My BMI was over 40 so it was no problem for me, but I
know my request went to the insurance company exactly as calculated to the
.0% BMI. If your insurance company has criteria that says your BMI needs
to be 40, I don't think they will deny you if you are that close, but you
never know. My husband's BMI is 38.5 and he was denied, but we are
appealing and I think he will be approved. Hope this helps!
